Exactly. Excellent example.
Local dealership spot: "We've got too many cars on the lot!"
And... whose fault is that? _________________ Mike

I always wonder when that announcery guy on top of the car lot sign is going to fall on his arse in the parking lot; bet we'd hear a lot of "conversational" then! _________________ Charter Member: Threadjackers Local 420 |

That and likely some small fish somewhere on the client-side feeling compelled to add some direction to show they know the score and can swim with the sharks. It doesn't matter that their contribution is useless or even counterproductive, they just gotta contribute and demonstrate that they are an irreplaceable part of the whole process. And personally, being a very small fish indeed, I can respect that (wrongheaded though it pretty much always is).
It's when they double down on the wrongheadedness that really gets me. For example, the one that set me off and drove me to start this thread* not only asked for a conversational read with no announcer voices, it linked to a sample they wanted the voice to emulate. The sample was an interview with a soft spoken soul, very natural, hesitant at times... conversational for sure. And then the copy... cheesy, hard sell boilerplate. Yeeeesh!
*At this point, I don't really have to mention that it was on a P2P site, do I? |

Now, THAT'S acting. |

For me, "conversational" is an almost pointless piece of direction.
Think about all of the different conversations you have in a day. All of them with different people, in different places, with different emotions, different perspectives, different goals, different intentions, et cetera.
It's almost as helpful as being told, "Okay, do this one like you're saying things out loud."
Useless. _________________ Doug Turkel (tur-KELL)

Foog, don't waste your time with envy...
A: Lots of other niches are very popular as well. I have friends who do nothing but pukey announcer reads, and they're getting plenty of work. (One's talent is much more important than one's sound when it comes to booking.)
B: Once you figure out what you do best, and market your services to people who need that, you'll be fine.
C: Cut down on the salt.

Wait, Doug: So the pukey announcer reads are talent?
And I think while a VO's talent may get a booking, one's sound will lose it. Best read ever, when done by a person who doesn't have the sound the client has in their head: Not booked.
Better pass me more salt. |

Bill, of course what you've said makes sense. But put someone with the right sound up against someone with the right sound and bucketloads of talent, and see who books it.
(And I know that you know this, Bill, but as subjective as this business is, there are no absolutes when it comes to 'who's gonna book what.' All we can do is give ourselves the best possible shot at it.) _________________ Doug Turkel (tur-KELL)

"Gimme a conversational read"
"But, this isn't conversational copy."
*blank stare from the copyrighter/AD/etc. in the client chairs*
The only time I have ever asked for a conversational read from a talent is when the copy I've WRITTEN was conversational. How difficult is that to understand?
Or, is there some country around here somewhere where people stand around talking like this<
"Say, Dan, I've been having erections lasting four hours!"
"Bob, that's great, but you know you should contact your physician for erections lasting more than four hours." _________________ Charter Member: Threadjackers Local 420 |
