Banksey posted this a little earlier-- but this take is interesting because the You're The Man Now Dog file has the whole transcript as it plays!

One day I got so fed up with those telephone terrorists I decided to be their worst customer ever. The only thing I kept repeating is: Wow... you have a beautiful voice, why don't you do something with it? Everytime the subject changed I turned it right back and made another comment about the caller's voice. After 25 minutes Exclamation I asked another question...

"Do you know THIS sound?"

-What sound is that?

Then I hung up... Wink

The girl (must have been MEGA blonde) called me right back to ask what the sound was, since the connection was lost. I repeated my admiration for her voice a dozen more times after which I asked her if she'd actually heard the sound...

She said no, so I hung up again.

Big shame I didn't tape the conversation...

Dang. I've loved to hear that.

In Dutch, no less.

Telemarketer calls to my place have dropped to about one per week since I registered with the Do Not Call List.

Yep-- me too. Dropped to Zero.

When someone calls with whom I've had no previous truck, I tell them "You're not supposed to be calling me!" and I hang up.
I should get their name and number so the PUC or whoever can fine them.

Hi folks -- this worked for us: I always answer the home phone with the name of our farm. (All work contact is via my cellphone...) If the caller asks for Mr. or Mrs... (no one we know calls us that) there's the surefire tipoff, so my response is always, "Are you a telemarketer?" They are required by law to respond, "yes" if they are. Our reply: "Please take this number off your list -- this is a business."

Finally, we're getting almost no telemarketing calls these days. Used to get 'em almost daily. And did anybody else notice that they seem to call right when you're lifting the first hot forkful of dinner to your lips?

Myeh. (nod to D.)

Like LaurenLee, I am also on the "Do Not Call" list. I have a friend (former telemarketer) who tells me that when folks were rude to them that he could easily (accidentally) select the "callback" option for your call. I am always polite and say something like this. "I'm very sorry, but I don't accept telephone solicitation. Could you please remove my name and number from your list?" Seems to work for me.

Hi Bill -- I wish the Do Not Call list extended here to Canada -- but as far as I've been able to learn, the "take this number off your list" approach has to be made to the individual telemarketers up here.

... and I've always loved the Don Rickles approach: "Love your enemies -- it drives 'em nuts"...

No telemarker yet has pronounced my last name correctly so that's the immediate tipoff. I usually answer the phone "This is Diane" and when the caller says "Is this Diane?" or "May I speak with Diane?" I know they ain't listening and... buh bye now. If I allow them to get started on their shpeel (sp?), at some point I say "You read very well."

Notice how most calls from telemarketers now have a slight delay (dead air)
at the beginning (as mentioned in the other post about the three tones)?
Listen for that delay each time you get a call. Say Hello? and wait a second.
If no response, hang up- legit callers will respond immediately.
