Years ago, it was suggested by several people who call(ed) themselves a coach that I could use AFTRA's rates "as a guide" to establish my own rates, even though I am non-union. Fact is, most of my work has been narration, and any commercial work I'd get has been through casting/production houses with set rates. But I'm now receiving rate requests from agencies and individual producers.

Whereas SAG/AFTRA doesn't differentiate between spot lengths, I'm now being asked to provide non-union rates for :15, :30 and :60 spots.

Can anyone suggest where I might find examples of realistic non-union commerical rates?

Many thanks!

Questions to determine your rates...

Radio,TV, or web
Local, regional, or national
Market size
Buyout or 13, 26, 52 weeks, etc...
Self recorded or at their studio
Full production, edited VO, raw VO
Your talent level and how busy you are

:10. :15, :30, and :60 you'll have to decide on.

I use a :30 and under rate, and a :60 rate.

The union rates are a reasonable number to base your pricing on. You may want to make a small downward adjustment if the spot is to be used in a small market where the client is paying "dollar a holler" rates for air time, but for anything from a top 100 market and up scale is not unreasonable. And why not charge the same for a :15, a :30 or a :60? This ain't a butcher shop; we're not selling it by the pound.

Thank you, Bill, and thank you, Lee!

Great considerations from you, both.

As always, when using scale figures as a guide, please add at least 30% to that to account for what a producer would actually be paying (H&R, disability, SS, etc.)
