Hey, Drew!
Kick those things to the curb... you'll feel so much better.

Well, it's been four months and four days since my last smoke. Starting to think I kicked this habit in the ass. I still get an urge from time to time, but what the hey...I get all kinds of urges. What's one more? _________________ www.voiceoverdrew.com

Drew,
Congratulations! I'm getting ready to undertake this task. Monday's my official quit day. I quit last year for about a month and fooled myself into thinking "we'll just one won't hurt". Ha! Think again. It's great to see your still off'em good job!

I quit in 1988 after 10 years and about two packs a day. I was 25 at the time and had been smoking for 10 years and it was HELL for about the first six months and then suddenly I was over it. Once you get over the hump it feels like you can do anything you really set out to do(which is a good belief to have starting out in this business!) Also as a sidenote it took me about 6 serious failed attempts before finally getting it right.
I would never go back although about once or twice a year I may light one up when playing pool at a bar, HOWEVER it was years before I could do that without risking picking up the habit again. So don't get any ideas.
Now I am kicking one of my other legal addictions, caffeine, which is tougher in some ways because unlike smoking, there is very little social pressure against it. A lot of people seem to have no real problem with it but it just makes me moody and irritable. |

Drew...way to go guy!
Russ...you'll do it!
I smoked for about 20 years...and quit about 10 years back.
Amazing how your body and energy level changes.
I've always been a singer along with my instrumental abilities in "my other gig"....singing got sooo much easier and "richer".
And the stuff you can do after you kick the habit?
Last year I was racing bicycles..until the demands of family/job/business
consumed so much time that I couldn't devote enough time to compete consistantly enough to maintain postion in the "GC"...I was Top 10 though for awhile.
It is so worth it in so many ways. You can beat it...and you totally win on many levels when you do. _________________ Wicked huge.....in India.

Drew,
This is very good news. 4 months is very, very good. Stay on that quarter-horse all the way to the finish line! _________________ Be well,

Drew -
By now, you have probably devoted a great deal of mental energy to the fight and have played all the mind games there are and have fought off many mental dragons. In spite of all the advances in stop-smoking techniques and the aid of various gums, pills, patches and all the rest - - it all still comes down to how you have programmed your mind. If you have programmed your mind to succeed, you will succeed.
I wish you every success in this most worthwhile endeavor! |

Dood...I smoked for 31 years...usually pushing two packs a day. I figured they'd bury me with one lit and my middle finger extended. Now, they'll just have to bury me with my middle finger extended.
Seriously, getting this far hasn't been as difficult as I had imagined it would be. Plus, there remains another smoker in the house. At the very least, I've inspired her to cut back considerably.
As for my sense of taste, I'm not sure I've noticed a huge difference yet. Things still petty much taste the same to me. One huge change: no more wheezing and smoker's hack. All gone. And yeah...I've put on few pounds. but I'm working on getting that back in control.
New Edit.
Welbutrin helped. But it IS a mental thing. I truly believe that much has to do with a crusade that I'm presently on at this time of my life. I'm attempting to shed as much B.S. from my life as possible. And being a slave to tobacco was a major B.S. aspect that had to go away. I want to be in charge. Not the other way around. _________________ www.voiceoverdrew.com

You've hit on a couple of important points.
I was so pleased when the wheezing went away, along with the occasional cough, hack and all the rest of the gacking that seems to be part of the stinky habit.
I have not been so pleased about gaining thirty pounds. I really don't eat any more than before, but I sure have put on the pounds! I don't know what to tell you about that except, but don't think that you are gonna fight just one battle at a time. |

Freakin' A, Drew. That's a great crusade! I'm working on something similar myself and it's starting to make a difference. Keep it up! _________________ Greg Littlefield

Drew, whatever are you doing with all that extra time not smoking two packs a day? You might gain a few pounds and have mind games to contend with, but surely the greenbacks sacks are waiting at the end of the driveway!
Keep it up, friend! _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!

Keep it up, Drew (and anyone else attempting). I started smoking late in life but got up to a couple of packs a day rather quickly. I remember the day I quit, too. It was my first real physical as an adult with a new doc under a new insurance plan. After he asked whether I smoke and I answered in the affirmative, he said "I'll give you my thirty second lecture. Everything you've read or heard about smoking is not nearly as bad as it really is. I can guarantee you respiratory problems, very likely cardiac issues and a strong possibility of at least one type of cancer. Think about it."
It was all stuff I had heard before, but I think deep down I was looking for a push. Somehow his matter-of-fact delivery and non-scolding method must have been just the eye-opener I needed. I distinctly remember crushing my half pack of butts and tossing them out the car window on the way home. I think that was also the last time I littered.
Good luck!
P.S. As others have alluded to, or stated outright, you really have to want to quit. You won't succeed for someone else...only for yourself.
