Yesterday, I got called ito an "emergency" voice-over session, where the director/producer arrived 45 minutes late. Okay I'm used to that, but the recording studio had told the producer that they already had a booking and they had squeezed him in - we now had only 20 minutes to record the guy's commercial.

After a couple of takes, the producer takes a phone call from someone - apparently doing some sort of construction at his "beachfront" house. We then need to wait for him while he swears and cusses, not only at his construction guy, but also his wife, who has some sort of involvement in the situation. Then the studio phone rings to announce the arrival of the next session.

The director seems to have some sort of need to try to impress us at the session that he's got "remodeling construction" at his "beachront" estate, and to impress the construction guy that he's directing "an important video project". Meanwhile the engineer and I are just trying to get the project completed so that the next session, who's patiently waiting outside can get in and get their job done. And I'm supposed to deliver a "warm and caring" message.

I might be a bit more understanding if the director was some sort of young upstart kid, but this was a 50-ish, grown-up guy.

Well, we got it finished, everyone seemed happy, but I can't help but think that the client would have gotten a better commercial if the director had treated everyone - me, the engineer, the people with the next session, and maybe his spouse and construction guy with a litte bit of respect.

Travis,

Maybe it's just me, but in situations like you've described, I can't help but think that maybe the guy is compensating for something. Laugh

In voice booth ready to rock. Engineer is taking some level from me, one of the "creative team" answers his phone, the 5th call in about 10 minutes. Everyone looks irritated. The creative is stood within 18inches of one of the studio monitors.

Banks - (Very loud) "He'll call you back!"
Lots of laughter .......Except from one person who's cheeks were glowing so red he could've grilled small steaks on them.

Is it any wonder I've been banished to Portgordon?

Indeed, Philip. You should have known your place. Don't you realize that the talent is barely a rung above the janitor in the entertainment food chain? Wink

I don't think I would use the word "grown-up" to describe this guy.

What a drag, Travis.
He got better than he deserves.

Deirdre,

Somehow I think when Travis is in the booth, that's not all that uncommon. Wow, there's a lot of talent on this board. I'm so glad I get to hang out here with all you folks!

It's only somebody's money and the clock is running.
Us polite Southern folks go absolutely crazy standing around "waiting" for the fulfillment of egos on a high-end video or film shoot.
But you know what....that's the way it goes...so we go with the flow. cool
