A phone call followed an email yesterday. The request was to provide the narration for a 30 minute Powerpoint presentation. The technicalities were discussed, delivery time and fee. Today the script arrived, this was my response.

"Hello X

Thank you for sending the script for the Powerpoint presentation. Regardless of whether or not a contract exists between us all information supplied to me is treated in the strictest confidence.

Having looked closely at the content and business proposal on offer to potential clients it is clear to me that ABC Ltd is merely a Multi Level Marketing programme with no real product. Whislt I refuse to take the moral high ground regarding such schemes I prefer not to be associated with them either directly or indirectly.

With apologies for the inconenience this may cause I am advising you that I will not be recording the narration for your presentation and for reasons of confidentiality on the part of your business assure you the email containing the scipt has been deleted.

Best wishes

Philip Banks"

Must be nice to be in that position.
If the scheme is obviously illegal and your voice is readily identified as a known personality, definitely stay away.
In this country, most of the schemers won't invest the money to use top voice talent. The plans that do may even use research groups to finalize the copy. I know, I have done marketing studies for several.
I now work with one based here in NC that people "thought" was a MLM scheme that has become one of the top direct one-on-one marketing companies in the world. They are so legal that state attornies-general use it as the example to judge others. So--you never know.
Again, I appreciate you personal integrity, but I gotta ask you--did you refer the job to another vo? Inoccent

This is the best line in the letter:

Did think about passing the job to someone else but thought it best to let him ask "do you know ..." rather than offer.

The scheme was in effect a Stupid Tax. We'll make you rich by getting you to tell others you'll make them rich who'll tell others they'll make them rich who will in turn ....... Get the picture? You sign up for $250 and get others to sign up for $250 and you get a share of those up your down line but presumably not of those up someone else's downline unless of course you're both up each other. Mmm there's probably pics on the internet of the latter.

Again, B-man--I applaud your integrity. All it would take is for a legitmate client to one day hear your demo and say, "Aren't you that guy that voiced that scheme that shafted my brother-in-law out of thousands?"

I can't afford to be too picky--so I would refer to another needy voice for a cut. Rolls Eyes (Just kidding)

Good lord-- that's a pyramid scheme!

Illegal as hell over here in the US.
The term "stupid tax" is altogether too perfect.
