As usual, the man is deep, and with great insight. _________________ Never do anything you wouldn't want to explain to the Paramedics

Lee,
I think many studios see the handwriting on the wall. Already, many have quietly adapted / and are testing various newer forms of technology with select talent. My hope is that someday soon all will embrace new technology. The nets will be the last to go, imho. _________________ Bobbin Beam

We ISDN users do realize don't we, that while these simpler web-based audio codecs are a wonderful and cheaper thing, that this change will take us from being in an elite group of about, say, 10% of the professional voiceover pool, and will put us on the same playing field as most everyone else?
It was fun while it lasted.

It won't change the numbers much on my end, because by the time it finally happens, I'll probably be too old to use it. _________________ Never do anything you wouldn't want to explain to the Paramedics

Bruce,
I've thought about that. Yes, now anybody can pony up the smaller annual fee and be on the same playing field. Which, in some ways can be a larger challenge for VO pros ...but the scenario can be overcome. We'll just have to be better at everything than "just anybody" who thinks this is all easy talk. It's a slog, truth be told. Those of us who are and have been around and know how to run a business, will stay around. Those who think they can cheap out, will be out. _________________ Bobbin Beam

While there might be some truth to your prediction Bruce, I think it will still all come down to the read. The 10% with ISDN are also the 10% who get the jobs to pay for their ISDN bill. _________________ Joe Szymanski

I've got many "isdn talent" who use it far less than they did before, some not at all. Big name talent you all know. Either their careers are waning or isdn is going out of fashion, I suspect it's a bit of both. Keep training, don't stop improving, and don't fall prey to that mentality that isdn is all that separates us wheat from those others... Adapt or die. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

Or perhaps with the advancement of technology, the studio the talent records from home is often the quality of the studio that would do the recording in an ISDN session. If that's the case, the only real reason for ISDN is to be directed and recorded. If the talent is top tier and known by the client, often the client will just say, 'you know the drill, record it when you can and send it over'. I get that all the time. Yet there's times when direction is wanted or needed, but in order to satisfy that demand, a committee is needed as well. Talent with an ISDN facility on one end, a studio with an ISDN facility on the other and the clients and creative personnel who also have to gather. More often than not, that's hard to schedule. I've had a client this week that wanted an ISDN session since Tuesday, but the first time the agency could put my availability with their studio availability and their client's availability, was this Friday at noon. And then there's the quality conscious, like NFL Films. They want to direct me via ISDN, so they can hear all the nuances, but have me record it in my studio and send them the session in 24 bit 48k WAV.
So maybe part of the answer to your observation is, with the logistics of scheduling and the faith in talent and the quality they can deliver, directed sessions via ISDN are not as imperative as they used to be. But personally, had I not had ISDN in 2013, the scope of my work would have been seriously diminished. So much so, that I bought a back up unit for redundancy, which is the post that started this thread. _________________ Never do anything you wouldn't want to explain to the Paramedics
