My most gratifying gigs are the ones that make my family proud of me, which is all of them!
That aside, the one I found the most fulfilling was narrating Close Encounters by Andy Duncan. That was the first time I was so engrossed by the story that I got choked up at the end and had to re-record the last line. _________________ Tom Dheere - The "H" is Silent, but I'm Not!

I'm lovin' this thread!
I think for me, one of the most fun projects I did in 2013 was this. It was average for pay, but the first time I got to be an animated character...so it was a thrill (it's not the usual type of work I get to do). Another one is an interactive exhibit for the South Carolina Aquarium's Animal Care Facility. I don't live in that area, so I probably won't get the chance to see it in action, but I like the fact that someone will push a button and hear me explain what they are seeing. I definitely want more of those . _________________ Back into the murky lurk from whence I came

So this discussion makes me think about the past year as regards actual VO work and what I have or have not said to anyone about it. Mostly because I see a great gap between where I am now and where I originally thought I could be by now, and also because family obligations will continue for at least the next 9 months to put the brakes on many of my potential VO business efforts, I've said little to nothing here about achievements I actually made in 2013. So in the manner Philip alludes to, I tend to judge myself rather harshly and assume that others might do the same, so I keep quiet.

Jen, your entire post really resonated with me. And I want to thank you for sharing it here. I, too, look back on the past year an immediately look at what I didn't accomplish, instead of everything I did. For me, 2013 was my first full year as a freelance VO, in addition to a full-time day job that runs between 40-60 hours a week. My ultimate goal is to quit that day job and do voiceover full time, but I have lots of fears and excuses for why that's not possible now and why it may never be.
That said, here are the awesome things I accomplished in 2013.
I had several repeat clients in 2013 that I initially encountered in the last quarter of 2012 (which was when I first started freelancing). I count the fact that this handful of clients kept coming back to me as a success!
I had several new clients find me online and book me on the spot without audition, and had my first ISDN session with one of those clients out of a studio in NYC.
Because the subway runs beneath the apartment I moved into last year, I secured a sub-lease on an affordable space that is working as a band-aid until I get get it treated properly and upgrade my sound quality.
I'm freelancing with two agents in NYC to audition for non-union work, and this has enabled me to meet a bunch of casting directors I would not have had access to otherwise.
I created a new demo composed of jobs I actually voiced and got paid for.
Did I establish a cash flow that will allow me to quit my day job? No, but I'm putting everything in the bank and investing in the day I'll be able to do that, whenever that may be.
Thanks, Jen. And thanks Philip for starting this discussion. _________________ www.juliaknippen.com
