well my computer is running much better since uninstalling Norton, but today I had another phone patch session and dammit there were, again, a couple of drop outs in my audio when I played it back.

The only program I had running was Skype, which I needed since it was a Skype Phone patch session.

I'm a bit stumped......

Unfortunately, this is not unheard of. Skype can cause the occasion glitch... but it seems like yours is a little more than occasional! I don't know if you're using video for Skype or not, but I always opt for audio only... it's less of a resource hog. However, the best way is to run Skype (video or audio) on another device (laptop, tablet, phone)... of course, unless you can feed your production audio to that device (patched off the mixer or whatever, the audio quality will only be which the particular device can deliver.... but that may well be OK for direction purposes.

The other thing worth mentioning is that you should not be keeping up with Skype software updates. It seems that the newer updates bring more problems than they solve... especially on Macs (nothing to do with Skype now being owned by MS of course). Every time I've updated from 6.3.0.582 something has broken... my camera refuses to work, or it's really unstable (they're up to 6.9 now).

This is why I have a second computer in my studio (well actually outside my studio but the webcam, video, mouse and keyboard routed inside) to use for Skype.

Rob,

Yes, just a little Mackie 802VLZ3. Audio is fed to the separate computers and their respective audio M-Audio interfaces from the same microphone. Returns from each computer are on separate channels. Works like a charm. I even switched my SourceConnect install to the second computer (I had to get a new iLok so that I could have one on my main workstation and the other on the second computer) and it works perfectly.
