does this ever happen to you when you're the one rolling tape during, say, a phone patch session? I just finished one and since my computer will occasionally blip out for a few seconds, I was double-checking the audio and sure enough, it blipped out for about 10 seconds at one point and so I had to
do a pick-up. Probably no big deal, but also not ideal.....so is it time for me to get a separate dedicated computer for audio....? 
BTW bit and sample rates were matched for my interface and recording software (Twisted Wave) and I had the energy saver settings (the ones that put the screen to sleep after X amount of time) set way back , to like 2 hours so that they wouldn't kick in while recording....my e-mail program was open, that's the only thing I can think of......except, again, maybe I need to bite the bullet and get a computer completely dedicated to audio and nothing else...... |

Do you have a backup program like Carbonite running? I find I have to pause it when I'm trying to record.

No I don't use that.
Maybe my Firewall or Anti-Virus..? Though it would be a pain to have to disable those everytime I record.... |

I assume that you're using a Mac (as you use Twisted Wave). You mentioned anti-virus software. I'm curious as to why? I was initially going to suggest stopping any anti-virus stuff (it's known to cause all sorts of problems), but then I just assumed it wasn't an issue because you were on a Mac and not running any. Lose the anti-virus software... also make sure that Time Machine isn't running.
I really don't want to start one of those discussions, but anyone I know who has been talked into using anti-virus on a Mac has always ended up taking it off... because it screws things up and serves no purpose.

Anti-virus a s that run in in the background are always a big NO NO in an audio recording system. Mac or PC, just use your brain, backup your system, don't install free crapware, don't click on popups, don't EVER download a .exe file, don't download email attachments without an email server that scans them for you first (like Gmail) and don't use Outlook Express and Internet Explorer (I could go on).Heck, using webmail is a great way to avoid accidentally opening an attachment.

| wow I gotta say, uninstalled the Norton anti virus and turned off the Mac Firewall and already my computer is running much smoother and faster... |

Norton is a notorious resource hog. You mention having email open: Just for safety, I'd close that. It shouldn't cause a problem but...

Glad to hear that's working out now! As I said, I really don't want to talk of the Mac/PC thing, but the point is that (due to their popularity) PCs are highly targeted machines and protection is not a bad thing to have. The only thing Norton anti-virus did for a Mac was increase Norton's profits. I do use my Mac's firewall all the time though.... I'd put that back on.
George is absolutely right though... good practices are the best anti-virus protection (that, and never let a teenager near you machine). When I was supporting PCs, I fixed more machined crippled because of anti-virus software than by viruses themselves.

The only good thing to say about Norton Antivirus, is that it's not McAfee.

As for the other Norton... Meh. George and Bish nailed it. The best antivirus is conscientious computing. However, if you use your audio workstation for other tasks, it's smart to wear protection, as it were. Schedule regular system scans, use an email provider that prescans your messages, and suspend your antivirus while you're working. And, remember, anything that runs in the background compromises performance. Shut em down while you work.

Somewhat related to the topic: I use the free version of AVG. Any thoughts on that?
And, also speaking of viruses, just this week I got this wonderfully tantalizing e-mail which IMMEDIATELY raised all sorts of red flags. Obviously I purged it right away. But just beware, this one is making the rounds right now:
