I was going to hold off on this question for a few days because I hate to be the new guy that starts a dozen threads a day. But, I also hate to be the guy with a noisy room.

I have been considering purchasing some acoustic foam (probably Auralax, unless there's a compelling reason to avoid their product?) for my too-noisy recording space. In another thread someone mentioned bass traps. Are they really necessary for a smallish (6' by 7'2") room used exclusively for voice recording?

cheers,

I recommend going with Owens Corning 703 or 705 in your bass traps (or their equivalent) Many people use the Auralex and get good results, but on paper OC insulations is supposed to absorb more errant frequencies.

Go to ATS Acoustics website. Lots of good info there.

Super-Chunks!!!!

Get a few OC703 panels and cut them into 4 equal triangles. Repeat until you can stack them up like a giant Toblerone, wrap them in burlap, and fix 'em in a corner. If you want it to be more self-supporting, make a wooded frame for the giant pseudo-confection before wrapping it.

I suggest using dark brown burlap to reinforce the Toblerone imagery Wink

Every SMALL room has it's own story, it's own narrative.

Bass traps are not likely to reduce NOISE. They reduce.... are you ready for this.... BASS. Low notes. Boominess. Muddy-ness tonality.

The bigger the room the further from the corners you and the mic can locate. The smaller the room the nearer you and the mic are going to be when it comes to a reverberant bunch of 'trapped' bass hanging out in the nearest corner.

Start without them and listen to your recordings. Bass traps are one thing that can be added later with ease in most cases.

For those of us who don't have a clue what a "Toblerone" looks like. Laugh

My pocketbook thanks you! Some nice, modestly priced squares of eggshell foam it is for starters. I'm guessing at the very least it will make my low, glossy-finished ceiling less bouncy if nothing more.

cheers,
Andrew Fogarasi

edited to add: The idea of a Toblerone wedge frightens me. Something so inedible should never be modelled after something so delicious!

And if you want a shortcut, I'm available for consultation.
Small rooms need bass traps badly, foam alone won't cut it.

Rats. I was hoping the small rooms needed it less. At any rate, I'll be sending you a PM in mere moments. Thanks!

AND....

If you are not already aware of it.

Search youtube for ewabs and you'll find a bunch of videos well worth watching for any VO artist. But, particularly those just starting out.

"Soundgun" would be the one WITHOUT the mustache. Laugh

Coincidentally enough, I was just writing him a PM telling him how much I liked those podcasts (webcasts? Whatever the appropriate term is) while you were writing this message Smile

This is not only about Bass traps but sound absorbing treatment in general.

I came across this clever little video that shows graphically how the right acoustic treatment can make a big difference in a room.
