Here is a file that contains audio from 5 different (well known) microphones that I own.

Realizing that every voice is different.
Some work better with some voices than others.
These files have all been normalized to sound approximately the same loudness.

Recorded through a Grace 101 (with no HPF engaged) then interfaced through a Mackie Onyx BlackJack USB interface. Recorded directly into Sound Forge 16 bit at 44.1

NO processing or Noise Reduction of any kind.

No pop filter was used. (which in retrospect was probably a mistake)

I will reveal which microphones you are hearing.

But first, I will ask your opinion of WHICH microphone(s) you prefer.

None of the mics sound bad, but my preference is mic no. 2

Mic no 4 and 5 are a close second place.

They all sound pretty good without processing. Hope that helps!

Mac

I like #4 best. Clear and less bassy to my ears. You have a soft, deep voice and need a mic that brings out clarity.

My hearing sucks - a lot - but my preference is also #2. Full and balanced (with just a hint of tannin and elderberries.... Smile )

#3 sounded really thin to me with a lot of mouth noise evident
#4 is very clean. Sounds quite flat to my ears

They do sound quite similar, but I thought 4 and 5 picked up more room noise. If I had to pick, I would say 2, but again...the first 3 were really similar (to my ears, anyway). Of course, I'm listening on laptop speakers right now, so it's not going to sound the same as through really good monitors Smile

#3 sound the worst.. #4 and #5 the best... your reads sounded like they varied a bit though, with a bit more brightness and perkiness toward the end of the test..

This is all very interesting...and enlightening.

Consistency is an issue for me. Half the time I'm not sure if I'm using my voice, or if I'm imitating someone else.

let me clarify "worst vs best" defines my preference in the mic you are using..

Reads #1 and #2 and part of #3 sounded more "informational".. Last half of #3 and #4 and #5, I detected more of a "smile" and what I heard was "have fun and come join the party"... none are wrong, just interesting how you varied it exactly half way into your test..

BTW. This does not mean that I am no longer interested in which mic you think works best with my meager voice. Based upon what I've learned so far....I am seeing a microphone sale in my future.

I do appreciate any and all impressions/opinions. You guys are the experts and your judgement and opinions are invaluable.

They all sound thin and tinny, but I'm listening on my phone's speaker, so... Wink

The Lawson is the L47MP with 24K gold plating and 6072 vacuum tube. Purchased directly from Gene Lawson in 2002.
