Here's a couple of pics of the new space. Not as impressive as these new-fangled boothy things people are building... but it works for me.
The bare room before work started... note the closet doors on the right... nice retro desk, eh?
The closet after the application of a bunch of 2x4
... complete with cloud and the safe'n'sound in place (the light was re-located)
The completed booth
... and the almost finished main room (complete with big blue ball)
Since the pics, I have replaced a number of the ceiling panels with OC703 batts, mounted the speakers on the wall properly, and slapped up a flat-screen TV. I'm happier working a larger space, but using the "open-backed booth" has given the opportunity to tune the sound nicely simply by moving back and forth in the space. _________________ Bish a.k.a. Very nice! Your pics have inspired me to get off my a$$ and get my room re-done. I've been procrastinating _________________ Back into the murky lurk from whence I came

Duh! I look at the layout and ask myself: Would I ever have opted for that plan? Looks great.
My questions: Did the doors to the closet go away (I can't see the door(s) in the final picture.) Do you feel any 'room noise' follows you in there? Have you experimented with turning things around which means you would have to squeeze past the copy stand and other flotsam and record facing the opening. If so, was there any difference in the sound? Any difference in room noise?
Thanks for posting the photos. Might never build one just like it, but looking at yours opens up the imagination a bit. |

The doors were removed, and I sort of stand in the doorway when doing short-form... talking into the "booth" I spent some time tuning the room itself so it sounded like my previous one (which was a bit smaller), and some A/B testing with a set of independent ears tells me that it's pretty much how it was (the ceiling cloud and the super-chunks really make the difference). There's very little bounce in the room (although it's not a completely dead space), and I usually do the audiobooks from my desk position. Luckily, my basement location (and the fact that the computer etc are in another room) means that I don't have to worry about external noise. I'd not considered reversing my position... but now you've mentioned it, I probably will, just to see the result. _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

With that added information about the "main room" that makes the 'whole picture' look even better. And standing approximately on the threshold of the booth space may be the best of both worlds.
No matter how well it is treated, it would take my ears and my mental process some time to get used to the 'sound and feel' of a fully enclosed small booth like so many people are using. I guess if a person normally uses headphones while recording, tiny booth vs. a big rambling room ceases to be a psycho-acoustic intrusion on the performer.
What would be an interesting experiment is to record, then crowd in maybe 6 inches into the booth and record, and then back up 6 inches out into the main room and record. If that amount of movement makes no discernible change in the recording, then you have created "The Space" where you don't have to worry when making one of those over-the-top recordings where hand gestures, waving arms and a lot of facial expressions fit the occasion. I dislike recording when I feel like a cow in the milking parlor with my head and neck stuck into the stanchion with no wiggle room!

Perhaps a little more info on your "ceiling cloud." I admit that this is the first time I've ever heard the term. Is this something you constructed yourself? (like you might a sound absorbing panel) Or something your purchased? I gather from a google search that it's supposed to hang from the ceiling? I guess the idea is to not have sound bounce off the ceiling? I find this a fascinating idea.
(Anyone else have experience with using a "sound cloud?") _________________ "I reserve the right to be completely wrong." |

The ceiling of my room in the basement is a standard dropped type made up of 2x2 panels. I took a few panes of 2x4 OC703 and covered them in burlap. I removed some of the ceiling tiles (and a few cross-pieces) and was able to drop the wrapped 2x4 panels into the ceiling at various points. There's at least a foot or so of airspace in the void above the panels, so they work better than surface mounting, and it means I don't have to have anything hanging into the room.
Here's a couple in place...

bish - love it -- functional & attractive.
clutter - i added a cloud with my most recent treatment & really like the difference it makes in my room. i'm sort of forced into a corner - talking a bit off axis to the long end of the room. i made it just like a wall batt & hung it from the ceiling with eye bolts & light chain.

Very clever. I particularly like Bish's solution of integrating it with the dropped ceiling. In my case I have a ceiling that is almost identical to yours.
Now, in this photo are we seeing audio treatment in two different colors? Does this mean you have practically wall to wall treatment? Or is it only made this dense in this particular corner?
I have read articles that claim 60 percent coverage can get you the results you need. _________________ "I reserve the right to be completely wrong." |

I'd probably agree that less is sometimes better. I did wall-to-wall (got a bit overzealous) and I am going to be pulling some out soon because it really sucked the life out of my audio. |

these cover about 75% of the room. but since they are on french cleats i can take some down - move them around - whatever suits my mood at the time. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis
