Hi all,

I was hoping maybe someone could shead some light on an issue that has developed with my Mic Port Pro.

It worked great a time or two when I first got it. It's my travel/backup so I've only used it a few times.

But now when I plug it in its output is super hot. With the gain all the way down it's over modulating with anything but a whisper.

I'm running a 416 into it then into a Mac Air with AA 4.0.

All the same gear works normally with my M-Audio Fast Track Pro and I'm out of nobs and buttons to try.

Anyone ever experience this?

Thanks in advance and apologies if it's a silly fix I should of seen. I'm usually relatively gear savvy but this one has me stumped.

I've noticed that you've not gotten a reply.

I have the M as do many others....but since we haven't experienced what you describe, we can't be much help.

First suggestion. Try a new USB cable. Those do go bad and a short inside one can give you all kinds of problems.

Next, you might try to uninstall and reinstall the driver.

If this doesn't work, my guess is...IT'S BROKEN. If it were me, I'd invest the time in a phone call to the manufacturer and ask to speak to a tech and describe your problem. They are the only one's who might have a clue.

If the gain is overriding even the lowest settings, it's an IC problem. Send it back for analysis. If their QC is worth a d@mn, they should replace it.

I had a problem with my M's gain running hot with a Windows machine. Not as crazy hot as you describe, but I had borderline hot levels with my input knob set to maybe 9 or 10-o'clock. (Sorry, it's been a long while and I don't remember exactly.)

This was the first mic interface I ever had and I only discovered the problem by accident when I switched to Mac and thought that the gain I was getting was much too low. It seemed like I struggled to eke out enough without causing other problems related to noise floor. Turned out that the problem had been with Windows - I think it was some drivers that were to blame.

So the only thing I might guess is that there could be a driver issue related to AA on the Mac. I didn't get hot levels with my M when using it with Audacity, and I'm pretty sure I also tested it out with TwistedWave without any problem. I haven't used it with my Mac in quite some time, though, since I picked up an Apogee One. So I'm only assuming that it still would work fine right now if I were to dig it out and try it.

Good luck getting it sorted! I know that's maddening.

Jen, your issue was not the M's fault, it is a problem with the Windows Classic Wave driver that affects any USB audio interface using said driver. Using ASIO driver fixes it, but can cause problems of it's own. Non-issue on Mac OS.

I don't know if this helps, but I used the M on an auxiliary system using a Dell desktop, Win XP, and AA 3 for about 2 yrs daily with no issues whatsoever, with heat,. or anything for that matter.. Don't remember if I used the Windows Classic or Microsoft Mapper, but I ran the output from the sound card in the Dell to the studio monitors.. No cans.. When I needed cans I ran them from the out of the M and switched the routing in AA 3 back to normal for playback..

I should of said, the Mac air is running Windows 7 via bootcamp.

I'll try messing with the drivers and contact the manufacturer if that doesn't work. I'll be sure to post the results up here in case it happens to someone else down the road.
