Since Philip asked about his email problems (sorry about the circumstances and outcome Philip), I'll forge ahead with mine as well.

Outlook 2007. The email chimes, or whatever that sound is, but nothing arrives. This only happens on occasion, but often enough to make me develop a small tick. I hear the chime, or whatever that sound is, sometimes see a quick progress bar, and then nothing. It's the equivalent of watching the mail delivery person stop by your mailbox, open it, put their hand in the box, move on, and then when you go to retrieve your letter, nothing is there. Have that happen several times a day and you'd get the opinion that one of you is batty!

I've checked filters and such and everything is the same as it's been for the last several years, and this phenomenon has only been happening in the last couple of months. I've Googled it and while others have experienced it, and solutions have been offered, I don't have any of the settings the solutions want to correct. Any suggestions besides wear ear plugs?

Interestingly, I had the same issue with Outlook 2000 on my desktop. It led me to think I was crazy.... (which I may be )

Problem solved when I upgraded my laptop, which was so much more powerful that I've since abandoned the desktop altogether. The laptop came with Outlook 2010, which, so far, has not exhibited the issue. I feel much less crazy today.

Perhaps our resident Microsoftie can lend perspective.... Corey?

The only time I can recall anything like that happening is when something came in that matched a filter rule. But I haven't used Outlook 2007 in a long time, so I really don't know for certain.

You could also uninstall it and reinstall it. Maybe the program has become corrupted from dat debil inside

Bit rot, it has been known to occur.

I did a little more looking around, couldn't find anything specific. My usual experience with this was that something got filtered and moved to another folder but still triggered the sound and icon flash.

I was waiting for someone to say 'disable the sounds' and / or 'ditch Outlook', so Eddie, Bruce, thanks for getting that out of the way quickly. FYI, I've had Microsoft before there was windows. It would be like getting rid of my really old dog. Not much use anymore, but I'd be lost without him.

Don, I'd considered the upgrade to Outlook 2013, but then read of people having problems with the new version. But then again, people are quick to complain, and even those that have problems wiping their nose, thanks to the internet, can blame it on someone else, so I take negative reviews with a grain of salt.

Corey, thanks for the effort. Found the same thing on Google before I posted this. It can't be going into another folder. I would see it in one of them and nothing new gets added at the sound of the meaningless chime.

And Eddie again... Uninstall and reinstall. It would have to get a lot worse for me to undertake that effort. As it stands, no one is saying, 'why didn't you answer my email?', so I'll leave that attempt for a later date if needed.

The point of this thread was to see if anyone else was experiencing this. Don was and it was cured with Outlook 2010. I might explore that, as I would only be three years behind as opposed to six.

Outlook Dangers;

FWIW if you are one of those people who keep all of you emails going back to the dawn of the Internet, then WATCH OUT for Outlook Express. (the one that comes already installed in Windows)

I don't know if this also applies to Outlook 2007...but, I'd be surprised if it didn't.

Outlook Express does not like for individual files to get larger than 2 Gig. In fact once they simply get VERY large there are all kinds of things that can happen. Like...all or part of your emails could simply "disappear." It's important to constantly compress (or whatever term they use for it) your email either automatically, or on a regular basis. BUT...if you haven't done this in a LONG time....please BACKUP before you try it. Since, I've seen the simple process of compressing cause you to lose emails.

Simply deleting or moving email out of your inBox DOES NOT make the inBox.dbx file get any smaller (unless you also "compress" it to get rid of the removed items).

Trust me, when I tell you this. Backup every day if you can. But Outlook Express was never designed to be used for the bulk of email that a lot of people are storing there...and simply doesn't have the technical ability to access files that are too big.

My solution was to finally install "Thunderbird." It's an email program that is not only free (from the same people who bring you Firefox) but will AUTOMATICALLY transfer all of your email, phone book and settings into it..so there is very little hassle involved in the change. You DO need to provide the email password however, when you run it the first time. It also has free plugin that have TD lists, Calendars, etc.

I tell you this, simply because of the headache's and nightmares with this program that I have had to endure.

Feel free to take it...or leave it.

I agree with the filters thing the others mentioned—

All day long I can see the progress bar and hear the chime and all that, and still get NOTHING.

There are filters I created to funnel some incoming stuff into separate folders, marked as "read". The mail fetch still goes thru its little dance but if it's one of the vendors I haven't stopped at the server, I'll get the "you've got mail!" alert even though nothing is in my inbox.
