Pam: Unplug the dbx and proceed. The preamp in there isn't any better than what's in the Mbox, and you don't need front-end processing when you aren't using ISDN.

Agreed. I personally use the 286a because I run stuff through a mixer, and I'm not particularly fond of the hipass filter on the mixer. Plus, for some reason when I use phantom power on the mixer, it adds hum to the monitors. So for me, I like having the processing available at the push of a button, and I like the hipass on the 286a much better than the Mackie 1402. I do almost everything in post though, unless someone asks for it...which doesn't happen often.

My noise floor burbles around -60, but occasionally jumps up to -20 or so and even as high -6.

The problem with my noise floor seems to be the floor noise coming from this guy (coming through the red curtains into my studio). He loves sleeping in here, but the snoring, snorting, and other "natural" sounds he makes make me send him packing when the mic has to be open.
