Both mics have been processed and positioned individually to play on their strengths....can you tell which one is the U87ai?
U87ai vs. ???

I listened back on cheapo Altec computer speakers and read #2 sounded grainy and unrefined... Read #1 would be the one I would submit if this were an audition or a gig.. But, what do I know.. my ears are shot.. _________________ Lee Kanne

okay I repositioned Mic B and did a re-take, thinking maybe different positioning had given Mic A an initial advantage.......try listening now |

Definitely much fuller on #1 and much warmer. Did you do some noise reduction on #2 but not #1? #2 sounds unrefined and cheap to me. Your read was quite a bit different on 1 and 2. #1 was much warmer of a read, and #2 was more matter-of-fact...less emotive, and more political.
I'd definitely pick #1, though I'd move over the mic a hair. It was a tad boomy. |

Ok...I was listening to number one. Your second set is much closer in the read, doesn't have the noise reduction (if that was in there in the first one), and brings them a bit close as an A/B.
#1 is still got more low end. #2 has a more aggressive sound. I think #1 would be best for this read (though some of the low end pulled back), but #2 would be better for an everyday use mic. #2 doesn't sound cheap anymore. It doesn't have the fidelity of #1, but it does have a good overall tone IMO. #2 also seems to have a lower self noise. I like #2 on your voice. It accentuates your natural texture in a good way. |

Ha okay I did one more re-take of Mic B to try to match it up to the read of Mic A ....okay last re-take I promise....
BTW this is purely for fun no life and death mic choices here.
Plus it's a Friday and I'm feeling Faffy |

Mic 1 is slightly oaky, with soft tannins and a smooth finish... Hints of chocolate, jam, and black pepper.
Mic 2 is less developed, with notes of citrus, pear, and a lingering aftertaste of armpit. _________________ Don Brookshire

dude, they both sound over processed. something is off.. they sound like someone was heavy handed on the top end enhancement on a DBX 286...
I listened back on the studio monitors and A is the better, but they both don't cut the mustard to me...
It doesn't sound like either of the mics is right for your voice, but its hard to tell without the processing...
Were you going for the Chrysler Guy - Eminem type no BS gritty straight read? (Kevin Yon) It sounds that spot was done on a SM7B, but then I saw pix of him in the studio with a 416 so who knows.... _________________ Lee Kanne

+1 for the capt.
Impossible to guess what is what with all the processing.
IMHO (Considering I am deaf in one ear and can't see out of the other) nether of them sound all that great.

Okay, I'm gonna be shocked if the first read isn't the U87. I could tell sonic differences in the unprocessed AND processed reads. As Jason said earlier, read 1 has more fidelity to it. That one IS the U87 right? |
