Put on a set of cans and turn them up, so you can hear the nuances of the changes in sound. It would probably be good to record, so you can hear how it sounds in playback, too....
Then try the following....
Boomed from above, and pointed not at your mouth, but at your chest.
Get close, but slightly off-axis, and growl at it, without excessive force.
From the same position, talk to it like a lover, low and sexy.
Then try the same two voices on-axis, but still close.
Step back, and with a little more force, try both on and off-axis.
Lastly, back off still further, and get excited.
You'll find that each of these approaches will give you an entirely different sound, all with the same mic. _________________ Don Brookshire

If it's within your budget Violet Design makes some awesome mics. |

Which Violet do you like Eddie? I heard good things about the Amethyst Vintage... Supposed to be a bargain but I couldn't get past the look... _________________ Colin Day - UK Voiceover

The Flamingo Standard. A recording friend in LA turned me on to these mics. Forget about looks. I was able to check one out once and loved the sound. |

I do commercials, narrations and am getting into radio imaging, mid range to deep male voice. I also am very familiar with RE-20's and I don't want to go in that direction.
The Grace and 416 are known for being clean/sterile and I might say a bit sibilant on me. I'm looking for a combo on the opposite end of the spectrum.
What would be good mic and pre for loads of warm, full, dark and thick colorful sound in a combo for ~$500-$1000?
Rode NTK + GAP 73?
???
Plugin or processing tips would also be very welcome.
Thanks in advance

I too had the 416/Grace combo, and while I appreciated the sound, I got annoyed by the kind of harshness. I decided to grab a GAP Pre to pair with the 416, which, in itself will give you different tones than the Grace, as the Pre 73 can be shaped with the gain/output to be more colored or clean as you wish. HOWEVER, I still wanted a good condenser for narration and grabbed an NTK.
So that's my current combo: GAP/NTK, and I like it. I was afraid it would be too "dark" or muddy sounding, but those descriptors get carried away. It just sounds really nice. |

Hey thanks Chuck! Exactly the kind of input I was after. I agree, the 416 and Grace are very very clean and can border on harsh especially with my voice. That's exactly what I wanted to get away from with my next purchase.
Much appreciated my friend.

I too have an NTK, modded by John Bonnell and with an Amperex NOS tube. I love it, though it's fallen by the wayside between my Gefell M930 and Senn 416. Interestingly, I also used to have a GAP-73. In MY booth, voice, etc. this combination *was* too dark and muddy! Just goes to show how the same gear can work very differently for different voices (and just as important, different recording environments). _________________ Best regards,

I have a GAP PRE-73 MKII in the closet that's ready for a new home (not an optimal match for my C414-XLS). Reasonable offers will be gladly considered.
Also, consider your converter. Made a big difference for me. (Yes, another thing to spend money on. ) |
