Joni-You and Deirdre can't post next to each other...your avatars one after another are making me dizzy!

Dave-Is that the GI Joe with the Kung Fu action? Looks like he's ready to karate chop!

That's actually Big Jim getting ready to chop-socky. I had clearly not yet figured out how to use his red chop-action apparatus.

Joe lies in wait, itching for action.

VO pay to play sites. Let's cut to the chase.

If you are paying to be on one of these sites hoping to get work there is a 95% chance you will get NOTHING.

Alles klar?

I'm all for fun and frivolity but "Hey Barney, love your avatar" does get in the way of discussions that lead to saving money, making money and avoiding mistakes.

Sometimes it best to post nothing if we have nothing to bring to a serious subject.... Yes, I've caught myself doing it too.

The above was a general point and not intended to offend or upset anyone

Banksey, I hope my post didn't imply that at all, because it certainly wasn't what I meant or intended. You know you rock!

Didn't think that for one moment.

My response stands and was intended to be taken seriously, if anyone was in any doubt.

For 95% of people, pay to play VO sites are a waste of money.

I have to agree with Banksey. Have you heard some of the 'demos' on these sites? They sound like something done with an old tape recorder. And there's a lot of them on these sites.

On the one hand, I'd like to see more quality control. I think that it reflects poorly on our profession. But on the other hand, it makes us sound even better Kiss

Actually, it doesn't.

Rather than sounding like a Good Deed in a Naughty World, our work is diminished by the company it keeps.

A wake up call to sites would be to respond "No thank you, I would rather not be associated with the majority of people on your site ...." when asked if we'd like to join. Phrased both graciously and politely of course.

I listened in on the Voice123 orientation conference call for new members. One of the questions was "Do I have to have a professional demo to be on Voice123?" The answer?

No!

"Of course, you might get more work if you do. But until you have one, just make sure there isn't a lot of background noise where you're recording"

I can't even imagine what the auditions must sound like for one of these gigs!

Another interesting one "I'm just starting out. Can I pay the membership fee monthly instead of all at once?" I can sympathize. I suppose we don't all always have an extra $200 laying about. But can you imagine what equipment this person must be operating with if she only has ~$17.00 available to invest in her Voice Talking business?

That's appalling.

Think how much more money these sites could be making if they started telemarketing randomly to sell their memberships.

If you'd like some kind of guide to which site you'd like to put your money into, find out what those paid listing sites are doing with their money. Pretend you're a producer looking for a voice....

Google:
female voice talent
female voice talent uk
female voiceover
female voice over
female voice commercial

OR the Male versions of those searches or search without the sex notation.

See who's on the first page under free or paid listings. Those that are on that page are putting some of your fee to good use. The rest...not as good.

I typed in "voice talent" and couldn't find one of the most mentioned sites in this thread in the first SIX PAGES of searching.

There's your sign.

Stars and Sites - 2
Voices.com - 2
Voice123 - 1
Personal vo websites - a zillion

Yep...I think there's a sign here.
