I'm with Lance, Todd & Andy as far as the CAD E100s goes. Got one recently to go along with my RE20 and I LOVE it! It's my go-to mike now except for long form, since the RE20 is a little more forgiving of all the ambient outside noise that might eep in.

If Tom decides to sell his, snap it up. If you don't like it, you can turn around and re-sell it easily for what you paid for it.

Plus, the box it comes in is uber-cool. Wink

As one who has used a 416, and now a 415, I can tell you it's not meant for every voice, or every situation.... But it DOES have its place, despite its detractors. It's not the only mic I use, and there are plenty of times I wouldn't even consider it.

Until you have a closet full of mics, you won't likely understand.

As for the shot across Bish's bow.... Careful with the attitude. The last guy to come in here acting like that got ahold of the wrong end of the llama....

And hasn't been seen since. Ninja

Bish is a fine young man and a credit to his zip code. I must take part of the blame here because I knew my own somewhat tongue in cheek comment about "Drunk the Kool-Aid" would probably edge up the dialogue. I also was just having fun. There is a long list of the top people on here that use the 416 as their primary mic. There is another long list of people that swear if you don't have a U87 you are a barbarian and a lesser level of VO. I always though it was in fun, because both mics in the right hands, er voices can produce incredible work. Having had and used both mics I made my choice.
Bish you knew you might not get out of this alive. In that spirit I applaud your courage in starting this. We must keep it all in fun and understanding that a great VO talent can use either mic. Because great voice talents DO use both. As well as other mics. I feel Grouchy Cat trembling on the verge of an appearance.

Did Todd ever tell us what his budget was... my original assumption was that he was getting an attack of G.A.S. and felt like seeing what was currently in favour with VO-BBers. If the e100s is being looked at closely, then that puts the budget in the sub-$500 range. Lots of cool choices there... but discussions of Neumanns and Sennheisers are moot in that case.

As for the Kool-Aid... it's all in fun. I am often accused of drinking it myself because I am an unashamed Apple fan-boy Smile

In no way did I mean to imply that you are in any way a new or novice VO. I am quite happy to accept that you have been doing this longer than me. My comment was based on your "perceived" newness to this community... this I admit was based on a post count of 9. If this was an inaccurate assumption on my part, thank you for correcting me and I apologize for implying otherwise. I do know that people move away and re-join these things.

As for me being belittling and condescending... my only problem is that I am totally bemused that you have taken what was an obvious joke and decided to purposefully and willfully choose to interpret it as some sort of holier-than-thou personal attack on a particular piece of hardware and its users.

It wasn't. It was never intended to be, and is only so because for some obscure reason you choose to see it that way.

A brilliant touch of the absurd, with a touch of the British misdirection and legendary understatement. Why do I feel the VO-BB getting back where I like to be? Maybe it's similar to:

"An elderly couple were sitting on the couch, watching TV.

She turns to Him and says, 'You know, I really fancy some of those strawberries we have in the fridge, with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.'

As He starts to get up, she scolds and says, 'SIT DOWN..! You write it down..! You KNOW you get to the kitchen and forget why you went there..! Write it down..!'

'Honey,' he replies, 'I'm on it. I got it. Scoop of vanilla ice cream on a bowl of strawberries..!'

'We'll see..!' she said. ''Add some real cream on to and see if you can remember all that..!'

'Got-it..!' he said. Strawberries, ice cream and a splash of real cream..!' and off he goes to the kitchen.

Half an hour later, he comes back, carrying a plate of bacon and eggs....

''I KNEW it..!' she snapped. 'Where's the toast..?'

And if i may presume to offer one more feeble Bon Mot:
"We must all hang together or we will all surely hang separately."

Okay...I'm not even sure what that means in the context of this thread....but I thought I saw some masterful threadjacking and thought I'd return once more.

Some time ago, I bought myself the (at the time) highly-hyped Heil PR40 thinking it was going to be the solution to my needs. We didn't get on at all. It had a compression in the mid-range which made me sound very harsh. Evidently, it's a great podcast mic, and some like it for VO, but mine ended up on ebay very quickly. I moved through a couple of MXL units. The V88 is great for the price, and the V69me is really smooth once the tube is replaced.

Mic lust struck again and I was on the edge of getting the 416 when the CAD caught my eye... it's currently my go-to, but I still feel the need to give the 416 a fair shake.

Now... about those pre-amps Wink
