I still don't get how you kept track of what parts of the takes were keepers and what weren't.. |
I hope this isn't over-explaining stuff you understood: in Peter's descriptions, it sounds like he's worked out a system of identification. The clicks serve as visual cues--which tells him what to do--during the editing phase. Makes for easy scrubbing.
"We keep paragraph one."
"So, we're keeping paragraph one?"
"Yes."
*X number of clicks to signify a keeper up to that point* |

As I'm recording the VO, I also record the phone patch audio as a separate track in Pro Tools. It really helps to have the client's own words about which take, or section, they want. |

If I am recording the session on my end, I always create a two-channel recording with me on both channels and the client on only the right channel.
It is so easy to lose perspective and train of thought without recording both ends of the conversation - this method preserves all that. My repeat clients have this down pat - knowing that they can make audio notes to themselves on the session.
I then ftp the ENTIRE session to them. Okay, I do edit out long gaps.
From there, the client has the ability to re-live the session, pick and choose takes and simply "mono out" the left channel which has VO only.
Invariably, clients like the ability to have the entire session and I like having a complete record of the event to refer to later, if needed. _________________ Dave Waters

Sorry, I can't use a dog clicker. I use those to train my dogs. If I did that they'd be whimpering outside my studio door waiting for a treat.
I just make a popping noise like the opening of a champagne bottle. That used to get my DW whimpering outside the door waiting for a glass of bubbly until I explained what I was doing.

I have a track log (on paper) next to me with a clipboard and verbally slate each take. E.g., "Ok, this is take 4, ABC on 'our coffee is the best' with more emphasis on the word best"
Next to the number 4 on my log, I'll just write "A B C" if it's a three-take, and circle the one the client liked (or circle two, or circle one with a note "+end of C"...you get the idea)
I've also used the TW remote on my iPhone to drop markers as I go. One mark for mistakes, two for the start of a new section of the script, etc.
If you go shopping for a dog clicker, go for one with a button, not one with a channel - they click better and more precisely.
And yeah - I have to finger-snap. 'Cause my dog clicker knowledge comes from training dogs, and they go nuts if I'm clicking without instructions & treats for them. _________________ Kendra Hoffman

Ive played around with this a bit today, and yes, the TW remote on the iPhone can operate in the same fashion as Bish's clicker.. If you are at the desk while recording even easier because you can right click each marker and label it accordingly..

Sorry to be non-techie, but I am. Can this be done in Audition, through a mixer--and more to the point...how?
Thanks |

Or, you just listen politely, acknowledge what they're saying, and send them the takes you know are the best.
