I went with treatment and am better for it.
But really... I transformed our 3rd bedroom in the new house acoustically and have plenty of space. Sounds good too! When you walk in you feel and hear that quiet vacuum.

Pretty much the same story here, Eddie. My wife now refers to it as "the quiet room". _________________ Don Brookshire

Nah, Rob -- I'm a booth-er, too.
But I'm only in it for recording -- I do my editing at my desk outside the booth... which is quite comfortable. I like the separation of recording space and editing space. _________________ Always look on the bright side of life.

Reluctant boother here. We're planning to move soon and I want to be able to be up and running in our next home with as little disruption as possible. _________________ Dangerous.

What good timing for this thread. I have a 4x4 booth that I got off eBay for a little over $500 installed about 8 years ago, and it has served me well. It wasn't perfect at isolation, but it was "good enough." But lately I've become increasingly unhappy with the sound I'm getting. A recent experiment with my new Porta-Booth Plus (intended only for travel) compared to my full-size booth and compared to simply recording on my desktop has been eye-opening.
I'm not happy with either booth! So now I've been thinking of getting sound-proof windows for my lower-level converted 10x11-ish bedroom, and treating my whole room instead.
I've just got a new client -and potentially another new client - both of whom promise regular work, and both of whom demand consistency in sound, so if I do indeed make a change, I need to do it now! _________________ Best regards,

Skip replacing the windows. You can achieve the same with some well-constructed window plugs..... A good deal cheaper and just as effective.
Perhaps even more so.... _________________ Don Brookshire

have no fear!
I would go the room route. As you expected.
Each situation is different depending upon what you're battling as far as noise goes. I have inlaws, dogs, and a train just about a mile away who LOVES his whistle. (LOVES!!)
My room now hears none of that. Unless the dog goes tear ass down the stairs, that I'll hear.
Here's where I would start. Take a spare room and close the door. What do you hear. Then start addressing those issues.
A sweeper and weatherstripping around the door helps, as does a solid door verses a hollow core.
Then a couple of panels of wrapped Roxul60 and kill off some of the reflections inside the room. The corner idea.
If you're trying to calm down expressway traffic, then things get tougher and we're looking at the basement. Airport noises? Leaf blowers? time for a bunker.
So things can be tackled in stages and can be figured out for your space. How far are ya from Exit 1 on the Turnpike? _________________ Company, villainous company, hath been the spoil of me...
