I vote Roxul60, easy to work with and a LOT cheaper than 703 for the same ballpark numbers on absorption.
and it smells better. _________________ Company, villainous company, hath been the spoil of me...

I liked that I could get a big pack of the 3" version since I thought it was better than the fiberglass. I built a custom frame around it and covered with custom fabrics to make the panels look a little more stylish.
My Lowe's didn't carry it in stock, so I ordered online and they delivered to the store at no additional charge. I paid just under $50 dollars. _________________ Gerald Griffith

Pretty impressive acoustic specs at 3.5"
C. Acoustical Performance: Sound Absorption tested in accordance with ASTM E 90, ASTM C 423 (Type A mounting per ASTM E 795).
1. At 3.5 inch (89 mm) Thickness:
a. NRC: 1.15.
1) At Octave Band Frequency of 125 Hz: NRC of 0.95.
2) At Octave Band Frequency of 250 Hz: NRC of 1.3.
3) At Octave Band Frequency of 500 Hz: NRC of 1.19.
4) At Octave Band Frequency of 1000 Hz: NRC of 1.08.
5) At Octave Band Frequency of 2000 Hz: NRC of 1.02.
6) At Octave Band Frequency of 4000 Hz: NRC of 1.0.
That is straight from their spec sheet. That is about as good as anything else you can get. They also make a 5.5" that has even better low end specs (though not a ton better):
At 5.5 inch (140 mm) Thickness:
a. NRC: 1.15.
1) At Octave Band Frequency of 125 Hz: NRC of 0.97.
2) At Octave Band Frequency of 250 Hz: NRC of 1.37.
3) At Octave Band Frequency of 500 Hz: NRC of 1.23.
4) At Octave Band Frequency of 1000 Hz: NRC of 1.05.
5) At Octave Band Frequency of 2000 Hz: NRC of 1.0.
6) At Octave Band Frequency of 4000 Hz: NRC of 1.01.
You can get an 8-pack of 7' batts (15" wide, 3.5" deep) for $50! You could easily make 16 great size panels out of that! You could totally pad a booth with that stuff without even covering it. You could probably just screw it in with 6 screws and washers. That would be enough to dampen most any closet booth.
You could also make bass traps for pretty cheap if you cut each batt into 8 triangles and stacked them in the corner. You could just put a hole in the middle, and run a rope through the whole thing, tie it to a piece of plywood on the bottom then run it through a piece of plywood on the top, and compress it a bit. Then just staple the rope to the top and you have a killer trap! Easy to cover at that point with fabric if you want to make it look nice. If I calculated correctly, you could make two full wall traps with a single package of that stuff (providing you only compress the batts by 1/2" and don't have 10' ceilings). |

Those are cool! They appear to only have the "Acoustic Panel" version in 1" or 2" though. The 3.5" has much better absorption below 500hz, especially in the 250 and 125hz range.
I checked it out, and the raw stuff is quite a bit cheaper than the ATS cotton batts.
I hate when new stuff comes out that I wish I had when I was building! I used the Rockwool brand insulation (which sound totally awesome), and could have saved a TON of work, money, and headache had I known about this stuff. |

I had a client with a booth that we created out of, get this, a wine storage room! It was a wedge shaped room, no parallel walls, and I stuffed the racks on both sides with the 3.5" cotton batting. Needless to say it sounds awesome. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

This stuff would make a great makeshift booth, too. Just a couple PVC frames an you could have yourself a great deadening booth (though not soundproof)

Cool. Apparently there's a dealer within half an hour of my house, and they're open on Saturdays AND Sundays. I will definitely be looking into this. |
