With an untrained ear (as it seems you are saying you have), you may not really be able to tell what sounds "best" for your voice without a bit of reference. When you tried the SM7B did you also try a whole bunch of other mics to hear ones that you didn't like. Sometimes, knowing what you DON'T like in a mic can help you find what you really do like.
If you were anything like me when I started, EVERY good mic sounded amazing. It wasn't until I spent some considerable time with multiple mics that I started to get what my voice needed in a mic.
Also, for your first mic, I wouldn't spend a ton. Your taste will inevitably change as your ear becomes more refined, and it would be a bummer to have spent a lot (and maybe on a great mic) on something that you have to try to sell because you realized something you didn't like about it later on.
Finally...where did you listen to the mic? Your recording space is about 90% of your sound. So if you listened to the mics in a treated room (or a noisy room at good ol' shiny stuff center) it could sound drastically different when you get it home. |

It just so happens.... I have a B1 in my mic closet. Haven't used it in ages. If you'd like to acquire it, PM me. I'll be gentle. _________________ Don Brookshire
