Hello everyone. Since I am new to the boards I wanted to introduce myself. I'm Ron from Arlington, TX. I spent 20 yeares in the broadcasting business (mostly technical and equipment sales with a very short, very forgettable stint as a weekend weathercaster in OKC). After a down turn in the broadcasting business I went into retail management for 8 years and for the past 6 or so years I have been in the IT industry.
Back in the day I did some VO stuff at the stations I worked for and really enjoyed it. I tried to get that out of my system with the retail and computer stuff but VO kept rearing its ugly head. I finally decided to confront my demons and see if I could make it in this business. I recently completed a course with Bob Michaels here in Dallas and will be taking another course with Bob in October. I have some cheap equipment (tin can and string) for practicing and will start building a better compliment of equipment later this year. I already have a padded room (remember I was a broadcaster) but it's not up to home studio quality. I don't have a demo yet. Not quite ready. I expect to do the demo after the first of the year (thinking about Gordon Nicol at Scotch Productions to produce it). Then I can sit around and wait for the rejections to start rolling in. Until that time I remain fat, dumb and happy knowing I will be a star.
I know I will have about 10,000 questions as time goes on. I will try not to overload the system with them. I am looking forward to learning from the posts here.
BTW I have given myself 6 months to dethrone Don La Fontaine. That's reasonable isn't it? |

Welcome Ron! You seem adorable. I can tell already that you'll fit right in (we're all adorable, too.)
And, as a bonus, you won't get anyone criticising your tin can and string. DB has decreed that it is against the rules. I'll just say I hope you're not using twine. I use jute and it's sooo much better.
(Oh-- and I'm new, too... everyone has been so welcoming )

As a relative newby myself, you have stumbled in to the most supportive and giving group of people you could possibly hope to find. Enjoy! _________________ Pam Tierney

Welcome aboard Ron. Be sure to drop us some sound bytes when you get a chance. Not everybody does, but it's nice when people do... then we know what they're working with.
Lots of good stuff in the archives to glean through. And plenty of people with years of experience, that are very willing to share. My best advice for anyone who chooses to hang out at the VO-BB... be a sponge. _________________ "Bailey"

Thanks for the warm welcome. Glad to be here. I have been lurking annonymously for a little while so I have some Idea of what goes on. I chose this board over some of the others because of the good natured banter and solid information I have seen here. Also some of the other boards' most recent posts are a couple of years old. Not as active as I would like.
Amy -- I have recently switched to jute as well. Much better sound quality than twine. I was using hemp which does not color the voice quite as much but after several takes I would get the munchies. Not sure why.
Brian -- I am allowing 6 monts because my demo won't be done until after the first of the year.
OK (deep breath) I am ready to suffer the slings and arrows of the board now. Several months ago I was talking to one of the techs on the IT account I was working for. He happens to be in San Diego and is a free-lance producer/director of independant films. Imagine that. Someone from California working a regular job but would rather be a film director. What are the odds ..... Anyway, he liked my phone voice and asked if I had ever done VO. Reluctantly I admitted I had done a little in the past. He offered me the chance to voice a docu-drama he is working on. The trailer has been released and is located HERE. This little thing got the bug back in me. This was my first time in front of a mic in about 30 years. No real direction except a couple of phone calls with instructions on how to pronounce Indian names.
There are a couple of places where the audio is a little distorted. Not my fault. Be gentle, this is my first time. |

Hey-- what's with all the congeniality?
This is a dog-doesn't-return-dog's-phone-calls business.
We're in competition with each other!
Rip! Snarl! Tear!
I kid.
Thanks for rolling out the red carpet, you guys. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

"A journey from Calcutta to Kolkata"
It's quite a short drive I understand. Ah, but the drive from Bombay to Mumbai! Now that's a .... well actually that's a fairly quick trip too.
Welcome aboard Mr. Ronphi.
Wait a minute, how about the drive from Leghorn to Livorno, or Venice to Venezia (you can do that one by boat!)? Ahh, the possibilities are endless.
Namaste, Ciao, Over and Out,
