|
|
I have a session next week with new client and we have been having troubles connecting cleanly so that I can roll a back up at 48Khtz. Source-Connect got me all set with matching sample rates and installed the VST plug in in Audition, and all is well, until I start to record, the signal gets crackly with drop outs.
Can someone who uses Source-Connect do a quick test with me to see if we get the same issue?
We can try using the VST plug in in Audition to connect and record - and also try using the SC desktop and recording using Audition in the background.
Anyone have time?
(PS, Source-Connect is analyzing a report from my computer, but hasn't gotten back to me yet today.) _________________ Playing for a living...

Connie,
Sounds like a latency issue within the VST plugin.
Check your cards latency (in setup). You will most likely have to check out and change this parameter each time SC is used in AA. I believe this will resolve the issue.

Frank - I have no idea how to do that. Is it in Audition - or someplace else.
Is that buffer size? It is set to 512 or something like that right now.
Just spoke to Graeme - we think it is probably my really crappy internet connection - not dial up, but might as well be! Getting new service on Thursday.
Will run a VST debugger from SC today and see if that does anything. _________________ Playing for a living...

Yes, it is in AA and located where you setup you soundcards. Which version of AA are you using? Once known I can direct you easier on the actual setup. Or you can call me.
Look for ASIO setup. View the latency and reset to a lower or higher number (usually around 4 to 6 ms) and it should sound better.
The internet connection will not be much of a problem unless it is too low of a speed for SC (SC requires/strongly requests/demands/urges at least 512 mbps up and down).

She was only getting 310 Kbps upload speeds when she checked earlier while on the phone ... _________________ Graeme Spicer

She will report later, but I think the problem should be fixed. Her soundcard and SC were set to 44.1 and 48kHz respectively.
Now set at 48 kHz each and ASIO applied, it is likely to no longer be a problem and latency not a factor.
The lower internet speed will still work, just not be as robust a signal.

Client went home for the day, but we will connect tomorrow in the AM and give it a test run.
With my luck it will work fine and then on Monday during the session, the city workers will be directly behind my studio with their back hoes and concrete cutters. _________________ Playing for a living...

OK, so no real resolution yet.
I am going to wait until the new internet connection is installed tomorrow - and then try again.
Changing the Gina to 48000 didn't clean up the crackle.
A side question! How in the hell do you get Audition to capture at 48000/24 bit?
This studio is asking for that (although I think we have decided to skip having me roll a backup record as long a Q Manager is working and we can eliminate the crackle in the line) and I have seen leads on V123 that asks for this as well.
Audition 3 has 3 options. 8 bit, 16 bit and 32 bit float. No 24.
What am I missing?
And this whole thing has been quite a brain drain for me, because of the various combinations of software and settings. I simply have no idea what we did and what worked anymore.
Oh, and thank you Eddie and Frank. _________________ Playing for a living...

32 bit float is 24 bit. That is all you need to know. I could go into a long explanation, but it is not worth the strain on my fingers.
Oh, now you should be able to re-set the latency in AA ASIO to between 4 to 8 ms. Your situation may be a result of the slow internet now, but I would select the ASIO drivers and see if you are able to change the rate now.

This may be unrelated but I've dealt with a wave of AA3 users lately. Most want to use Skype as a phone patch, and we have numerous issues getting AA3 to share it's resources with Skype to the point where we end up using a secondary audio device specifically for Skype to resolve the issue. Substitute SourceConnect for Skype, and it may be the same solution that works best. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

AA3 user here who exclusively uses Skype or Google Voice as a phone patch. Never had a glitch on my end, and I'm a glitch-magnet. George, do you mean the issues are with capturing Skype feeds for say a podcast, or just sending out a signal for live monitoring? _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

OK - cable up and running. Successfully connected (not without an error message that popped up but then went away) with Garage Creative in Ohio at the 48K he needs.
Was able to actually run a clean record simultaneously as well, but when I opened it to play it back, we lost the SC connection and had to reconnect.
Still have not tried it using the VST template that CS created for me, but at this point - Q Manager is working and the test I recorded from the SC desktop sounded clean as well - we just can't play it back while we are connected.
I am going to stop messing with it for right now - at least until after the session on Monday that all this work has been for. How lucky were we that the session got moved to Monday?
Have to say the cable connection is soooo much better than the DSL. Can I hear a "duh!" from the peanut gallery! _________________ Playing for a living...

Congratulations!
Did you start AA prior to starting SC? Next time try starting SC first. You can do this prior to connecting and check the record playback capabilities - you may also do this without being connected.
There is a glitch within AA 3 which can cause it to do what you describe. It does it to me on Skype too.
And, "Duh!".

Frank - Clarification please...
1) If I am using the SC desktop to record, should I start AA at all?
2) If I want to try using the VST template to record, then I should start which SC thing (that's a technical term) first - the Q Manager or the Desktop or both? _________________ Playing for a living...

If you are going to use AA and SC together. Just put SC into the VSTin AA. No need to have the desktop and AA open. If you do make sure AA and SC desktop are set to the same sample rates. |
