On an interweb there is a web sight populated by a number of VO people, the majority of them Brits and they talk of many things concerning the state of the VO business.

Are you part of this group? Probably not. Am I part of this group? No. How does one become a part of this group? Like the most secret societies in Washington DC or Harvard you join by invitation only.

At 3am on a Thursday closest to a full moon you receive a text message. You answer your front door dressed as a Girl Guide with a variety of citrus fruit inserted in "places". Hooded by a Mr Men duvet you are taken to a hillock (a small hill) and cry the oath of bollocks (a small boll) at the moon.

"Mogami shure et neumann! Sovt synch ADR. Should I spake a word to others a poker goes up hee-yar!"

After humble bows the ceremonial Pork Pie of Waitrose is eaten and there is the official bestowal of the URL and password.

What redeeming feature hath this most secret place? Honesty! The Wizards o'the Voxcraft, whine, whinge, bitch, tear chunks out of other VOs including fellow members. Should one of the wizards o'the Voxcraft meet you in a person they will be polite, smile and pass the time of day then in the next Voxcraft huddle you will be pooped upon from a great height. Honesty and courtesy.

Because they are speaking ill of people, ill of things does that mean no good will come of their whispers? No.

What of us mere mortals, should we seek deeper waters for our relationships and risk opinions that are unpopular? Yes we should but I fear we won't.

Would that be "méprisable nous"?

I'm all for honesty, but you Brits are better by far at public courtesy, whereas too many American seem to think "freedom of speech" means "freedom to speak like a jerk".

It's true— we don't do anyone any favors if we tenderly recommend use of a mill file to fix something that requires a chainsaw.

That said— it's necessary here at the VO-BB to keep things civil. This is a family. In my experience, your family is the most deserving of your best manners and courtesies because they're the ones who'll be there to pick you up out of the gutter.

I like this place to be an oasis away from all the dreck and inanity of the web. Sure we can post kitty pictures, and tell someone to go to hell, but really bad language is reserved for situations and not colleagues, and we're most keenly interested in helping each other stay sane in a mad world.
If some folks prefer to do that by jousting— that's splendid.
Here, I believe we prefer to confer over tea and biscuits, with an occasional tussle in the dirt after the floor monitors suggest it be taken outside.

Deebs, as oldest of six girls and two boys in one family, I liken this to "fight among yourselves, tell the truth (even if it hurts) to each other, hug a lot, and always present a united front against the outside world."

To which I'd add that candid criticisms of the follies and inanities of life are to be expected, in our out of family.

The key as ever is moderation in all things. Some people confuse an argument with a fight, the former is constructive whilst the latter is destructive.

Tell an Englishman "we need to talk" in your most severe tone and the response will be "Tea?" If you're offered tea and accept it you'll be able to talk, you'll be expected to listen and will get honesty, empathy and where appropriate, sympathy, all in good measure.

Ask a Swede the same thing and suddenly he doesn't see where the problem is.

Passionate discussion is lovely. My one favourite thing in that circumstance is being proven wrong and instead of being scolded for not knowing, lead into another type of discussion.
