Is there an international symbol for "pumping sunshine up an orifice" that we could use here? (I had another hand motion in mind that applies mostly to males but seems perfectly appropriate here as well).

I read the copy on that blog entry and thought to myself, "What a load!" Notice there's lots of excitement being generated around going to NY and LA and meeting with SAG/AFTRA and "big"agents. But no concrete promises.

As a writer, I salute them for successfully shoveling that load as well as they do.

As a VO, I say, move along here, there's nothing to see.

Also as a writer, I get a LOT of emails each week offering me writer's workshops, retreats, classes, one-on-one "sessions" with "famous" writers (unnamed), chances to meet "big" agents in the publishing business (and we all know how well the publishing bidness is doing these days), etc. etc. ad nauseum, as a dog returneth to its vomit, etc.

So, pardon me if I'm not immediately rushing right out to sign up. There comes a time in one's life when the BS detector is finely honed, quivering, and dinging and you say, "No thanks, peddle your wares to the next schnook, sonny."

My first reaction was to jump on this without looking at it properly. So, as far as the principle of another P2P ... (insert expletives here), another one!

However, I skipped around the blog and dug into the site a little more. What they seem to be offering is not a site for new talents & noobs, but a paid portal for established VOs with agents. In their FAQ they state... no agent, no registration - and contact must be made via the agent, not directly. As far as I can see, the service is provided for registered producers & studios to look in the agents' shop windows to find suitable VOs.

It seems that the only issue here is the charging of represented VOs a couple of hundred bucks to be in those windows... making their own agents' life easier.

I may have read this all wrong... and even if I got the facts straight, I may be missing the point somewhere. $200 may be a good investment to get yourself in front of that many "quality" clients.

Confused.

Bish,

I noticed that, too, once I dug through all the breathless hype.

Yeah, I dunno. It seems to me that if I want a virtual water cooler, I've got one right here, and if I want a place for my agent to promote my demos, that's what voicebank is for. Voicebank also offers forums, for free, which seem to me woefully underused.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't really see the added value. Unless it's supposed to be that this is Australian in origin and targeted there, which leaves me meh.

I just put that down to the irresistible magnetic attraction (and compulsion to congregate wherever there's beer) that Aussies have when abroad Wink

What I found quite interesting was that if you follow the links looking for talent, and select "by agent", you can find lots of friendly and familiar faces. The registration is free at the moment so why, indeed, not. This should mean that there's lots of people here who know all about the arrangement... unless, of course, the registration was done by your agent and you know nothing about it Smile

In which case, it begs the question, will the agent be stumping up the $199 when registration is no longer free? I crack myself up sometimes.

But there are dozens of casting agents out there who charge the talent nothing. They're paid by the producing ad agency or other such entity.

I take that back a little. There are plenty of casting agents taking our money in the form of meet and greets and classes with ad agency people.

Place yourself on your own web site or get yourself on as many web sites as possible then Twitter, youbook, facetube, linkTin, OrganisedCrime123, CannuckVO.com, Bankvoice, Netvoice, Blorg for all you are worth.

There is no room for you in the VO world, sorry. There is simply not enough work around and that will always be the case ...ALWAYS ..Forever and ever Amen.

If you do now't else today accept the above as the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth

Find yourself unable to accept the above? Find another dream, VO work is NOT for you.

Accept the above as truth? You stand a very good chance of making a living as a VO.
