Because I talk good with a microphone, I am the football announcer for the high school at which I work. The flip side of that duty is that I get to read all of the graduating students' names.

Today was practice - 392 students.

Saturday will be the real deal.

I have all the phonetic pronunciations written down, I'm running through them tonight. It's a bear! At least it's good practice for hard-to-pronounce words.

I ask that you keep me in mind, that I have no CSTs and that I don't ruin anybody's life by mispronouncing their name!

Thanks!

i would just call them all something generic with a specific identifier like the last 4 digits of their ssn, like:

caucasian male 9162
hispanic female 8741
other transgender 7629

i think that would go over VERY well.

otherwise ... good luck!

Hey Karl!

Just relax and read the names as if you were a proud parent...I'll be thinking of you on Sarurday. You're gonna be great!

All the Best,
Mark

LOL! Thanks Todd, interestingly enough, I thought of a student for each one of your examples.

Shouldn't we just warehouse keyboards for Liz?

Lee's pictures FTW! (I don't know how you do it, Lee!)

Todd, as usual you are both bad and 100% on the money. Wink

Good luck Karl! You'll do great.

Lee snuck into Liz's garage for that pic.

I'm working on a rubber jacket for her keyboard this weekend.

Thanks for the good thoughts and vibes. All went well yesterday - I just messed up on one name slightly. But nobody came after me in the parking lot to yell, so that's a positive. Summer break begins - time to give full time effort to voice work....

Glad that went well for you!

I marvel at some of the currently popular names... a lot seem to be like random scrabble-bag pulls, and there's no-way that you can rely on sight reading to get the correct pronunciation.

No, no, no - it's spelt Raymond Luxury Yach-t, but it's pronounced 'Throatwobbler Mangrove'.

I do ok with the made up names, there seems to be some sort of unwritten rules developing.

The name that got me was an African student's name...her middle name is "Chidubem", and even though I practiced it, I transposed the b and the d. Unfortunately no second take. I got her first and last name correct - the family still applauded so I guess they recognized it was she....
