Seriously good viewing. Stick on HD and full screen it. Live multi-camera behind the scenes of a TV news prog.

Very interesting... but just keeping up with all the action/direction wore me out. I was ready for a break after 5 minutes.

Ack!

I directed a few news casts (and lots of public affairs programming) at Channel 8 in San Diego in the late 70's while they were deciding on who was going to get the job for good and decided that this was NOT what I wanted to do with my life.

Very much the same thing every night combined with lots of stress. And back then we were still calling A/B film rolls in sports. The rest of the newscast had progressed to 3/4 tape packages - with 1" spots.

So, I took the part-time booth announcing job instead - and the rest is history.

ABC 8 WGHP High Pont 1969

No 3/4', No 1' Just (3) 2" Quad and Film. Some times in order to fullfill commercial log, we had to pre que spot #4 dismount it while on supply reel and takeup reel. Then load and que first spot, load the other two machines. When spot 1 ran, stop VTR dismount and remount #4 before spot #2 & 3 finished playing the other 2 VTR.

I had the idea that if On Air talent could hear the director that would help keep errors down. Now it's called IFB, Talent liked it but the Director didn't and had it removed.

I don't belive ABC network was doing IFB. Is it possible I was the first engineer to provide IFB, no way to know?
