Thanks very much to all who have replied! I have much food for thought. I've never been much of a promo/trailer kinda guy, and I'm not sure I'd like the lifestyle if I got a lot of that sort of work (being on call 24/7 does not seem like fun).
To be clear, I really don't think I "need" a -416 because the magnificent sound of it will magically make me more popular. It's more that I wonder if it is expected by these national and regional production houses that hire ISDN talent. Gee, how about if I were to ask THEM? I do have a Facebook friend who works at one of these places, so I'll see what he has to say about it and report back to you.
...and yes, I've been lurking on eBay for used -415s and -416s. They seem to be such rugged mics that it should be a fairly safe purchase. _________________ Best regards,

Go ahead and get one. Keep it in your mic locker. And you're ready when you need it.
I was actually thinking of getting one eventually but more for recording guitar than, "In a world...." They're a great mic to aim at the 12th fret and grab some great string noise. _________________ Company, villainous company, hath been the spoil of me...

I've been one of the people dissatisfied with the 416 in the past, finding it sibilant on my voice. But long story short, I recently upgraded one element of my mic chain to a unit that was wired with more quality circuitry and I suddenly now have more low and mid frequencies, which balances the high frequencies a lot better. The sound is rich, full and detailed, without the bass being overpowering, so I find myself using it for almost everything. _________________ Joe Szymanski
