When I go to Dunkin Donuts for coffee, I have cut back from two donuts to one.

When I was living in Burbank, I was able to exercise twice a day, nearly every day because the weather is so supremely fine. One 1/2 hour (mile and a half) brisk walk with sticks in the AM and one jog/walk/run thingie (same mile and a half) at night as a reward for getting my work done.
I did Zumba twice a week in place of one walk — golly I LOVE ZUMBA. An hour of solid sweating.

In December, my doctor in New England said he's never seen such a great A1c. Mine was starting to look suspicious.

Up here in the temperate rain forest where it is now pouring rain and snowing at the same time, walking outside is not an option quite a bit of the time, so I do Harvard Steps— two sets of step up, step down for 2 minutes, one minute off. First round is with weights to medium music, the 2nd is briskie! I don't usually use weights for that. I found plenty of one- and two- minute pieces of music in my video game music libraries. Really fun stuff.
I also have to do 20 push ups and 20 crunches while my video game first loads. and either one or the other for the in-game loading screens. And with my current game there is a lot of long-ass loading screens.

Lee for the win!

I usually go indoor rockclimbing at least 2 times a week, sometimes more. It's very rewarding in many ways. Here's me climbing on a feature wall...



I have a daily yoga routine and I alternate between a situps and pushups program (daily). I often throw in some other home-workout stuff like squats and the like. I'm usually good with cardio (running), but my first Canadian winter has seen the decline of my willingness to go outside every morning. Laugh We still do a fair bit of hiking, though.

Can't wait for it to get warmer here!

I got it at Sports Authority it's a ProForm 400 not too many bells and whistles. I kind of remember $600 on sale. I like it lots.

Lee as regards donuts, true story.

I moved into a new office and my neighbor drop in and brought donuts as a welcome gift, they were great. I told him they were every bit as good as Krispy Kreme. He laughed "they aught to be my daddy was the founder" of KK. His name, Carver Rudolph, his father Vernon Rudolph.

Wife and I have been stock holders for years, but alas no Krispy Kreme for me.

Ah.......working out. It is always important but is much more age specific because of one word.... metabolism. I use a rowing machine about 5 times a week and do a few weight reps between. it will be an eternal battle now or as eternal as a mortal can be on the downside of 40.

Does it help our performances? Of course it does. In at least two ways, Energy and breathing. And simply feeling like hustling for the gigs after a usual day of home/car/yard/equipment/family hustling.

And then we remember the immortal and huge Orson Welles and "I will drink while I whine one more time"

I just recently got back into structured exercise, which the last year of baby and moving to a new city had pretty much snuffed out. Well to be honest, before that it had been mostly snuffed out for a couple years by previous baby and working full time! It's hard to believe I've been away that long, except that my body recently screamed at me to do something to make it stronger. (It had taken enough abuse at the hands of children, apparently!)

OK! said I. Smile

Personally I like the most efficient methods that I can find since I don't always have much time. So for sure when I do cardio it's HIITs, usually on the stationary bike where it's easiest to maintain stability. 20 mins in and out, hopefully 3x a week but at least twice. Then strength training - again trying to be really efficient. I have had a couple sessions with a trainer, which I am on the fence about - we'll see if I continue past the 3rd one or not.

Of course, I managed to pull my quad muscle while just kneeling down to the floor the other day Shocked so I now have to stop the new routine while it heals. Frown Trying not to be mad about that and look at the long term.

Also... while I'm doing the cardio at the gym, I channel-surf for TV commercials since I never get to watch them at home. hehehe Wink

I've got a gym membership, but can't go as much as I like due to schedule, so I've added iPod exercise aHobo Tounges and just discovered some great training vids on YouTube. Getting into a new exercise routine gradually. Must always make time for fitness!

Oh yeah, and on the days when I just can't take the time to get the bike out or head to the gym, I try to take the dog for a brisk 2-mile walk around the neighborhood.

Really, there's almost nothing like a good brisk walk. It's how my wife began her ultimate weight loss of about 45 lbs. She worked up to doing a 4 - 5 mile walk about 4-5 days a week.

I like your description of "one jog/walk/run thingie", DB. I've heard it called wogging. Run the straights and downhills. Tackle the hills as quickly as possible. Living in Virginia, there's plenty of hills between the straights.

Joyce Vedral says of exercise, "We do it because we like the results." Kind of like brushing our teeth.

I love this thread! It's nice to see how some of you are looking out for yourselves. For me, I bit the bullet and did the 60 day INSANITY program. HOLY CRUD. It was hard, sometimes I cried, but I loved it. It's very intense and can be intimidating but with modifications I saw great results. In 60 days I lost almost 9" off my entire body. I did the program through Thanksgiving, my birthday, Christmas and New Years and didn't eat a single cookie or pie and didn't miss any of it.

My results may have been so good because I'd just been cleared to exercise after 5 months of near bed rest due to a leg injury (I now have permanent holes in 3 muscles and they are darn large holes) and I had gained a lot of weight and lost a lot of muscle while on the down low.

This week I started the program all over again. I love it and can't wait to see how it treats me this time around.

Mandy, I don't have a clue what the "60 day insanity program" is, but let me throw out a bit of common sense: Being healthy has nothing to do with diets or spontaneous crash-exercise programs... it's a way of life. You try to eat healthy every day, as much as possible, and get exercise on a regular schedule. You also try to get adequate sleep and ingest things like caffeine and alcohol in minimal or - at least - reasonable amounts.

As a society, we get caught up in so much work and stress that we neglect daily care of our minds and bodies, then try to make up for it in short bursts. And that's about all it's good for - a short burst. For long term health and happiness, it requires a true lifestyle change.

I'm right there with you on that. Even when I was not able to move I had a very healthy diet. That didn't stop my body from changing for the negative. Being able to be crazy physical is just something I love (I live near Holy Cross College which is all hills and I loved being always strapped the kids into a double jogging stroller and sprinted the hills and walked the flats. That is what Insanity does for me without having to run, which I can't stand. I have a very athletic history but running is something I've never enjoyed.). The healthy lifestyle is a natural part of my family's every day. My 5 y.o. looks at every meal I put in front of her and counts the healthy parts. Even she knows that rice krispies aren't the best of the best.

I forgot to mention that I teach yoga 3 1/2 hours a week - and will forever be a student - and there is no way you can do yoga on a regular basis and not have it be a part of your mind with every step you take. And there is nothing like having 60 students to encourage and teach and guide to keep you grounded.

For me there is nothing spontaneous about this program. It was my kick start to my normal, healthy being. I would recommend it to anyone who loves interval training and is looking for something new. I encourage the lifestyle of daily exercise and proper diet. I felt so horrible back in November when I had to sit in front of my yoga students and teach them but be waaaaay out of shape and over weight and clearly tired. They are glad to have the old Mandy back and I'm so glad I can bring that to the mat.

(even with all I've said above, I still love my tequila. mmmm)
