You live a charmed life, sir, and/or you're living on a major Qwest nexus point up there in Park City!

Hey Dan--
Look at you there, blending these two divergent mini-threads back into one smooth line of gorgeous connectivity.
So, yes
A) wireless card sounds good, and
also A) The LD thing can really be tricky. Tried Verizon LD for a while. Worked fine, except in connecting to some states, it totally did not. For me (knock on wood) MCI is good.

I had to make a special request for the 2B+D set-up and it did take while for the local boys and girls to figure out I knew what I was talking about. Once connected to the ISDN backbone of the telcom network everything is A-OK -----now!

I thought you were saying that you've always found it necessary to have ports mapped when you're in a hotel and using SC. Is that right? But then, you spoke of only port mapping when you were home or had access to the router--ie, not in a hotel where the router is inaccessible. So I'm like, Huh? |
Sorry I wasn't clear. My experience at hotels, relatives houses and anywhere where I wasn't able to log in and map ports has been that when I would try to pull up Source Connect, it would say "port not mapped". When I would try to use it, the VU meter input display was choppy and not showing real time audio. A test connection either didn't work or resulted in audio that was extremely choppy. At hotels, I never bothered trying to find the right person to give me access to the router.
At home and a couple other places, I had the same experience before I mapped the ports, which fixed the issues.
Also, in relation to the air card Dan mentioned, I went ahead and got the Verizon offering a couple years ago on a pay-as-you-need it type of plan. It does fix the port issue since there doesn't appear to be a firewall built into it. Speeds weren't the greatest though which depends on cell coverage, of course. The only time I tried to use it, I did a test call first with Out Of Hear and the medium setting gave us good results. High was just a little too bandwidth-greedy to be totally smooth. When I tried to use it for the session, the studio at the other end said the audio was choppy. I keep it on hand as a last resort. If an ISDN studio is nearby, I much prefer to go that route. It just annoys me when a perfectly good hotel Wifi is available and I can't use Source Connect on it because of the port issue.
My experiences with Source Connect on a good internet connection at my studio have been great. _________________ Joe Szymanski

Thanks Joe--- -There's nothing that comes close to ISDN for reliability and simplicity--At least not yet. |

I was just about to buy a used codec from Dave at Digifon but figured I better get the monthly pricing first. 10 years ago, it was only $50/mo. I tracked down the appropriate folks at Ma Bell and was told it would be just shy of $200/mo. Lordy! I ended up buying Source Connect figuring I could bridge to ISDN. |
