So this morning I had a session at 9AM. Now, I have nothing against the time of 9AM -- often I wake up just in time to see it. Getting to a studio session by that time is a little more problematic and involves alarm clocks, but is still doable...

It's my voice that doesn't like it. I have to do some SERIOUS warming up if I expect to sound like anyone but Brenda Vaccaro... I accomplish this by belting out songs (usually show tunes, if I'm being totally honest) in the car on the 15-20 minute drive there.

Works for me, but I'm wondering what other Night Owls do... When I'm given a choice for a scheduled session, I always choose around 11AM -- this gives me time to leisurely face my day and warm the cords gradually. I'm sure it would help if I could get to bed before 2:00, but habits are hard to break...

So -- what is YOUR warm-up routine like? Do you like early morning sessions? If not, when is your preferred session time?

Some musings on a Tuesday.

I had an 8AM this morning. Did nothing different. Walked down to coffee around 7 and left a few minutes earlier than normal in order to be back in my studio so that I could get the work done before 10 AM.

Of course, at this stage in my life I do not need a lot of time to wake up my voice. I just need a reference track to see what "voice" I used for the job and I can pretty much match that any time of the day - after that first brief moment upon waking sounding like a croaking frog.

I realize now - from an earlier thread - that not everyone's voice does this - and I am sure that one day, I will find myself scheduling things around the sound of my voice.

However, I used to schedule sessions after 10 and before 2 when I was traveling to studios to record - didn't want to face the morning and afternoon traffic.

I've been doing a lot of 9 AM session over the last few weeks, and though I like to get up early and start work early, I don't really record until 10 a.m. or later (if I can help it).

For me, the main thing is hydrating. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. As ya probably know, it's a good idea to start drinking water at least 45mins before a session. A friend and voiceover guy suggested that me when I was starting out. However, what I like to do is keep a bottle of water near my bed so the minute I wake up, I'm drinkin'.

If I start at 9, then I'll probably wake up at 7 at the latest. If I've been up late the night before I will try to get to the gym and have a swim and jump in the steam room. I find that the steaming helps to wake up me and the voice.

Kristin, I'm totally with you on the show tunes! Singing really helps and you can't go wrong with a few tongue twisters.

Also coffee. A lot earlier than the session though.

I'm usually up around 5 a.m. so 7 a.m. sessions aren't a problem usually, and some clients East of here appreciate it. I'm penciled in for a 6 a.m. session on Friday, but that's to play an old codger and I have no problem sounding like one at 6 a.m.

Coffee, water, and a little vocalizing such as singing get me up to speed pretty quickly when need be.

One of the reasons it's nice to be on EST -- I can get up at 10:00 and still have the job in an LA client's inbox by 8 AM. Laugh Bruce, I think you are the President of the Early Bird club, and this Night Owl bows to your ability...

Hydrating is a good reminder -- I love my daily Diet Coke fix, but it can be the enemy of hydration. I'm sure I could stand to work more water into my daily routine...

cool

There are only a few mornings out of the year when my voice isn't up to par right from the get-go. Perhaps it's because I, too, start drinking the minute I sit up. Water, of course. Wink

It works both ways. I have a bottle of scotch sitting right outside my booth, so the minute I finish voicing...
