Bought a new, emergency MicPort Pro! Yay!
Chose to pick it up at Guitarget instead of having it shipped to my door. Boo.

Didn't realize it would take two sales guys almost a half hour to get it, followed by 10 minutes of complicated data entry--for which a third guy had to be called in. Then, instead of the usual cursory receipt-check at the exit, my ID was examined, info was added into another computer, I had to give my signature, and then...I kid you not...a MANAGER had to be called over.

They finally let me go, with no explanation as to why they didn't ask for fingerprints and a urine sample.

Some guy frisked me on my way to the car, but he was just on a break from the BevMo.

MicPort Pro is totally worth it, though.

Reason #235 about fearing to shop at GC. I shall never forget going in to buy a mic, only to have "mic guy" ignore me for quite a while, but step right up to help my hubby when he walked over. Totally passed me over, even though I'd been there, he'd seen me, and deliberately turned around to fiddle with something on the back wall when I walked up. Hey, I got the message.

haven't had that with GC, but suffered through it once at a walmart across the street. i think the reason i used ship-to-store was that the price was lower online. but even though the same item was plainly in stock and on the shelves in the very same store, i had to wait a week for an identical item to be shipped, then wait half an hour in the back stockroom while half a dozen employees walked past, ignoring me. then it took two managers and a stock boy to go through all the computers and paperwork to let me have what i had paid for. ...and it was a lousy dvd movie!!!

so far, the only website/to/store pickup i've had any luck with is best buy. for anything else, they can either ship it to the house, or i don't need it that badly.

I haven't been in a GC for years, but I always got a slippery, slimy feeling every time I was in there. They dropped a few more pegs in my estimation when a hypnotherapist acquaintance of mine, who wanted to record her sessions for clients to take home, went to them for a microphone. They sold her on a $350 mic when a $100 mic would have been just fine.

Guitar Center has been a joke every time I've been there, if you're a woman they completely ignore you.

Not to sound arrogant, but at GC, I always get the feeling that I know just as much as the kid I'm talking to...

On the other hand, I always get good service from Sweetwater..the guy I deal with, Emmett Andrews, is a former radio production guy, and totally gets V/O..

Last I heard (from George) he doesn't sell them individually anymore, only as part of a package.

I highly recommend winning one at FaffCon. Laugh

Never met a nicer bunch of folks. (And no extra charge for the frisking!)

Hmmm... them there's some stories about GC I never heard. That sucks. Never had a bad experience with them, but only because it was more convenient to do so, I stopped making the hour-long drive to GC in favor of shopping online with Sweetwater. Been with them for almost 10 years now.

I do most of my non-grocery shopping online; mostly via Amazon.com. Prices are good (usually better than stores), an order will frequently qualify for free shipping, and who doesn't like having things brought to them (delivered at home)?

But a very important factor will determine where I shop: customer and/or technical service. If the poor service is the result of administrative policy, that's one thing. But when it takes several emails just to satisfy yourself that the person (allegedly) reading them actually understands your issue, that's not off to a good start. My ISP's people have very often replied to my email based only on what they read in the subject line.

Sorry I went slight off-topic. My point was that conducting business (shopping, etc) via the internet can be great. I prefer it over visiting stores. I never have to deal with driving to a store only to find out they don't have what I'm after. Online, most times you can place the order entirely by yourself. You immediately see what (if any) the shipping charges are, what carrier will be used to deliver your order, and a tracking number. The tracking number alone is great. There hasn't been a single time when the delivery day was incorrectly projected. It's great to wake up one morning and run the tracking number, to be informed that my package arrived at the local FedEx depot at 4:45am and that it is now "out for delivery." Knowing that - and even if a signature is required - I can still go out if I need to, so long as I'm back by 4:45pm, which is the earliest FedEx is ever here.

My biggest caution is for security. I'm very careful what I click on.

I got my iLok at Guitar Center - and my nerves were frayed the moment I walked in the door - had to go through a barrage of sound to get to the Pro Audio Area - and while I don't let sales people ignore me, I too am amazed at the amount of people and keyboard entry that is required. First trip out the door came close to, but no actual, frisking.

My first iLok was already in use - it was in a sealed package - so I had to go back and get a replacement - and hope that THAT one hadn't been hijacked too. Second trip past security was a breeze - no one in sight.
