pulled the trigger on a U87 for $1,400. There were some other decent deals but nothing outrageous, people knew what the value of things were...

That's a good buy.

These days, most people do know the value in advertised auctions like that, which is why I'll get giddy at them, but seldom bid.

The best way to get good stuff is at estate or garage sales and- I once found an RCA 44BX where the old lady was using it as a door stop-- took it home for $15. Back then they only sold for $200, now you cant touch a nice one for less than $1800.

Good stuff is out there, just got to look for it.
