Don't forget the "engine." Open up that computer and vacuum out the dust. My Mac is notorious for the creation of beautiful little dust bunnies. Luckily, it opens with a lever.
Also, you should turn knobs every once in a while. That sounds funny, but I'm serious.

thanks for the reminder, anthony. that's on my list of things to do today! unfortunately my computer is rack-mounted in a case manufactured in the bronze age and it takes three men a leased llama and a medium sized boy to get it out! _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

I used to buy small cans of (expensive) compressed air to clean the dust bunnies from the innards of my computer(s); tedious at best. What I find works best for me now is disconnecting the computer, taking it outside on the patio, opening 'er up and, cautiously turning the 'ol lawn clipping blower on high (150 mph rated windspeed), and presto... dust magically disappears in seconds. I always check and reseat memory chips, connections, etc, before reusing.
Contrary to my previous facetious comment about the blower on mic diaphrams, this really works. _________________ If attacked by a mob of clowns go for the juggler.

careful of moisture buildup inside that blower - you COULD be blowing tiny h2o particles all over your computer innards! same with using the air compressor in the garage - those things build up a fair amount of water. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

Yeah. Always better to suck than blow (Spaceballs anyone?) Cans of compressed air can blow moisture on your gear - especially if not held upright. |

Good thought. I imagine certain parts of the known universe where frequent 90+% humidity is the norm this would potentially be a huge problem. Here in the central valley of northern California it's normal to complain when typical daytime humidity exceeds 25%. _________________ If attacked by a mob of clowns go for the juggler.

Whenever I do a spring clean (which I keep putting off), I swear by Deoxit Gold for cleaning all my interconnects.
Quite expensive, but a little goes a long way and even the tiniest cannister lasts for ages.
I spray it on all the audio plugs and sockets. I've known some to use it on mains plugs, but maybe thats overkill.
It's amazing stuff that actually brings the high end back. Magic. |
