I've been a sometime user of the beta which came out last year. My initial, and continuing, impression was that for $99, I was in, and for $299... meh. Well, it's now available for pre-order at $349 (new user) and $99 for upgrades.
I've never been a fan of Adobe's pricing policies... personally I think it encourages the use of "unregistered copies"... and I'm sure that if it was priced at $99, they'd more than make it up on volume.
Bottom line... $349... double meh. _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

thanks for the word, bish.
i've been happily using version 1.5 since i had to give up cooledit (wouldn't work on a newer computer years ago), but haven't heard anything in the improvements since that has made me want to upgrade.

I still use Cool Edit on a couple of Windows XP equipped computers. And last year I installed it on a rental laptop that was running Windows 7. I've never felt any need to "upgrade." _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

I have to admit, I am not a great fan of the "new audio engine" in AA CS5. Overall (in my humble opinion) I agree with Bish -- meh.
If you do not have an editor or need to move past simple basic cut and paste, then why not go for it. Otherwise, (quoting) "...if it ain't broke don't fix it".
And, Adobe did not "fix" anything, they broke it for Windows and added Mac to the player list (good thing).

When I got my new laptop about a year ago, running Windows 7, I also had a free, and legal, copy of ProTools to install on it, which I was somewhat interested in playing around with.
It wouldn't install properly.
I promptly grabbed my nearly decade old copy of Cool Edit Pro 2.0, installed it in about 2 minutes (literally) and continue to enjoy it, trouble-free, to this day. _________________ Scott R. Pollak

yes, jeff, 2.0 is teh suxxors. i have found aa3, however, to be super stable and am really happy with it. i'm running the aa mac beta, and while there's nothing particularly WRONG with it, i just don't find it as appealing as the windows version. so if cs5 is basically the the mac version for pc (is that right, frank?) i'll just stay put. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

Well, sort of Todd. The CS5 version is the PC version with the Mac toys added and a new, less stellar sound engine (the sound is a bit on the muddy side with less crispness and cleanliness). By the way Adobe is really touting this "new" sound engine as the end all to be all.
Watch for an upgrade in about a year. I believe the users of AA will cry out for a better version - soon!
Jeff, get 3.15 and the issues with 2.0 will go away... did you not notice how quickly (for Adobe) to get an upgrade out? Less than a year of 2.0 and it was G-O-N-E.

I'm with you Rowell! I've been using 1.5 and not upgrading because of the horror stories like Jeff related. I've heard it doesn't work as well with Windows 7 though....so eventually when I upgrade to that I'll skip straight to AA 3. _________________ Adam

It's well known that there's no love lost between Apple and Adobe, and Apple's latest announcement from NAB is putting the whole question of the pricing of pro-a s up for debate. They've just announced the latest Final Cut Pro will be available from the A Store in June for $299 ... this is down from $999!!! I think this is a solid endorsement of the "we'll make it up in volume" pricing policy. This is straight in the face of Adobe's latest Premier which is up for $799!
I'm hopeful that Apple will soon announce comparable pricing for Soundtrack Pro (maintaining it's differential with FCP) ... hopefully at around $99. Or even the whole Final Cut Studio package for four hundred!
edit: the hopeful Soundtrack Pro price is assuming that they de-bundle it from Final Cut Studio and make it available as an individual application again. Speculation is that all Studio products will be available from the A Store as individual components.
I know this only directly helps Mac users, but the aggressive pricing stance taken by Apple, and its obvious "up yours, pal" to Adobe, will help everyone. _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish
