I usually have to travel to the Big City for things like coaching or demo production. The subject enterprise is offering skype based individual coaching sessions at a cost that seems reasonable to me. I wonder if any of the denizens of VO-BB have experience with them since their pricey master class promises big bucks in vo for grads. I read the posting rules so please pm your horror stories if any.

Thanks for any insights

bob

I don't have any horror stories, but I really don't trust their business model and they seem more interested in telling people what they want to hear and get more money than anything else.

I did look into them when I was exploring training options, but I just got the heebies about it and told them I wasn't interested when they called me.

Bob,
I'd suggest you look to the archives. I'm pretty certain you'll find this topic has been discussed before.

Check the archives and also you may want to really check their reasonable prices. I know of two top teachers Pat Fraley & Marc Cashman who are less per coaching session. Those are just two examples that come to the top of my mind ,their are others out there do your research.

Since phpBB's search function is really not that good for phrases (at least, I don't know how to do it), I've taken the liberty of digging up a couple of threads relevant to the topic.

Thanks for digging those up.
The search function in this board is pretty lame, I'm afraid.

There was a time when I wouldn't allow discussion of Such a Voice here and had instead my email address.

It just became too much after a while— the queries, I mean. So we can continue to point to the discussions already here and hope people continue to see the light.

Yup! That's what I thought.

So I am still looking for a coach in or near Chicago, NW Indiana, SW Michigan. I am not a starry eyed wannabe, but vo doesn't pay all my bills, either. I've attended numerous workshops and I think its time to get a fresh approach from a new perspective. I am recording an audio book now, and another is in the wings, but I want to sharpen the edges and probably put out a punchier demo in the near future. So book reading/narration is the skill set I want to hone. Those who replied to my OP seem pretty knowledgeable. Can you suggest anyone? Should I just start a new thread? Any advice is welcome and appreciated.

Bob, Pat Fraley is doing a Chicago audiobooks event in early-mid April. I attended a version of this workshop in Seattle late last year and thought it useful. It helped me get my bearings, make some connections and also get a quality demo prepared. Not having to travel to attend was a big plus for me as well.

You sound to be a bit ahead of where I was at the time, but not so much that I don't think you might be interested and benefit from working with Pat and whomever else he has lined up to support him that weekend. (Usually, it seems, he gets another respected narrator to participate with him for part of the event.)

Check out Pat's website for details.

Is Pat the exception to the Don't-take-a-class-where-you-get-a-demo-at-the-end rule?

Good question Jeff. I wondered the same thing, whether it should be a red flag for me.

At the Seattle workshop the demo production was optional for a relatively small additional fee. Knowing I wasn't locked in eased my mind. Afterward, I was able to hear my tracks from the workshop and decide whether to have them produced. I went out and compared what I had done with other demos online. Feeling like my stuff was reasonably on par, and that it wasn't unrealistic that I could match the level of quality in my tracks without a director, I went for it. But certainly I would say 'your mileage may vary' depending on the individual participant.

To all who offered help and commentary – Thank you thank you. It is a comfort to be able to ask naïve noob questions and get thoughtful, respectful, supportive, useful responses. You rock.

It hasn’t taken me long to find info on the interwebs that confirms the vibes I get re Mr. Fraley and his abilities, sincerity and ethics.

@ Jen - Thanks for responding with your experience. It seems you have no buyer’s remorse whatsoever.

@ Jeff – Based on my cursory due diligence and the vibes I continue to get from SOV, it seems highly unlikely.

@ mcm – Thanks for an excellent lead.

Well, I’m off to class…….. Wink

Jeff - I meant to say it is likely that PF IS the exception to the never take a class that ends in a demo rule.

My Bad

Premature send button syndrome
