Alesis not my favorite company out there... Ever since ADATs I've had a bad taste in my mouth about them.

I swore off anything Alesis after both my Alesis Nanoverb and Air-FX boxes crapped out. But that was before they went bankrupt and were acquired by Jack O'Donnell - supposedly they've improved their build quality. I'm interested in any audio interface that can work with an iPhone or Droid, and if it'll work with an iPad.. it might be coaxed to work with an iPhone ?

i still don't see the advantage over a notebook (any notebook) and a MHobo Tounge.

i'm searching for the holy grail of using a smartphone to make a high quality recording - ideally with the capability of adding EQ and compression - then editing, converting to mp3 if necessary, and emailing to client - all on a smartphone.

Even if the StudioDock can be made to work with an iPhone, I don't it'll cut it. For $199, how good will the pres be? You'll need external power. It's actually LESS portable than a MHobo Tounge/ 13" MacBook / Smartphone combo. It's great if you want MIDI, pedal fx, etc.. but i think most of us here just need a single, balanced mic pre with phantom power.

But it's a good sign that future iAudioInterfaces may be on the horizon.

Agree that a Netbook or Macbook Air with MHobo Tounge is still more useful and portable than an iPad. My MyTouch 4G on T-Mobile gives me unlimited data at faster than DSL speeds for $30/month with NO tethering (ATT) fees.
Very happy with it...

In this YouTube video the Alesis rep says the dock can be battery powered and the USB is in/out. I'm questioning both claims in that I didn't see anything that looked like it would hold batteries. Plus, I didn't think Apple allowed USB in/out on this device. It might be MIDI but she claims you can connect to your computer. Doesn't that mean this would make it an interface as well? I'm on the iPad/Mac Air fence myself. We know Garage Band is available for the new iPad. Plus, there are lots of recording aHobo Tounges that look straight forward.

I've never known Apple to allow USB audio even using the adaprter on the iPad. But, Andy Ihnatko discovered that the USB port would allow you to use a USB microphone because the iPad had the drivers to support it. This could potentially be shut down on the new iPad.

Not sure why anyone would need more than a Netbook and a MicPort Pro for a road or portable setup.... A Netbook's dimensions are almost identical to an iPad, except it flips open. A MHobo Tounge Air is more HP but almost 3 times as much..sure you get Garageband free or have the Twisted Wave option, but you also have the cheap Studio version of Sound Forge for the Netbook...

I believe the Mac Air comes loaded with iLife11 which has Garage Band on it.

I'm reading (Sweetwater Alesis Sales Page) that the new iPad 2 is not compatible with the new Alesis iO Dock. The quote below on another message board tells why.

I wrote the company and Kurt Heiden, Marketing Communications Manager for Alesis told me that statement on Sweetwater's web site is completely false. They claim is absolutely will be compatible with both iPad and iPad2. The Sweetwater text has now been changed to reflect that.

my road setup is smaller than an iPad. Using a little vaio Wundows 7 computer that's a little bigger than a #10 envelope.

http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10151&catalogId=10551&langId=-1&productId=8198552921665896691

That, plus a mic port pro and a modded Oktava and a pair of Bose travel headphones gets it done. Tethering to my phone or inding a wi-fi connection rounds it out. I use Sound Forge 10 and Waves Platinum.

I also blogged about Studio 6 http://jsgilbert.com/?p=528 over a year ago and got to see them again in November. They have the best audio aHobo Tounges plus a high end audio interface.

What I don't understand is why Apple keeps screwing over the folks that make great hardware and aHobo Tounges, by coming up with upgrades that disarm aHobo Tounges and periipherals. Studio 6 was having trouble getting some of thier stuff to work with the iphone3 or 4 or whatever number they're pushing this week.

Seems a little like Facism to me. The trains are running on time though.

Yesterday I connected my mixer from line out to the stereo mic jack of a Kodak Zi8 video camera. The camera connects by USB to my Mac Mini and MPEG Streamclip (free) allows me to export only the audio.

Apogee has a microphone for iPad 2 to be announced and at a price to be named later.

J.S. I agree with you about Apple. Steve Jobs has proven on more than one occasion that he will change the rules no matter the cost. Was it going from OS8 to 9 that forced everyone to buy brand new software?

Bill,
There seems to be a very fundamental difference between MAC and P.C. (or perhaps mroe specifically Microsoft and the Windows community vs. Apple)

Unfortunately there are many of us who seem to fit squarely in the middle and don't benefit.

The Apple mentality as I see it is to not have any tie with the past keep us from technoligical advancements. Despite whether some piece of equipment came out 6 weeks ago, Apple could choose to replace it with something that has totally different inputs, peripherals and software requirements, in essence making the 6 week item ratehr limited in terms of life span.

This contrast heavily with the P.C. world that even to this day refuses to dump 8088 code, which is 25 years old or older. The need to run software that might have been realized in 1993 seems to be the "downfall" of the p.c.

Shouldn't there be some more realistic limit to this?

Add to this the somewhat Gestapo mthodology behind Apple's AHobo Tounge store, which seemingly keeps out product for no particular reason, alon wiht Apple's need to nullify any decent "hack", unapproved aHobo Tounge or interesting interface.

I also have difficulty with all the age descrimination prevelant in their markeing campaigns, especially when one considers that Steve Jobs is 56 years old and half the owners of theri products are over 45.

Now that the iPhone has gone over to Verizon, I will have some big decisions to make this coming July or August, when th 4G netwrok is available on Verizon and there will be a choice of iPhones and Droid phones.

for me - iphone vs. droid is a no-brainer - comparing phone to phone droid takes the win. jmho.

i'm a dual platform guy - but recently dumped my mac in favor of a dual boot pc/mac machine. same mobo/processor/video card with a mac hd running osx and a pc hd running win7. i'm going on 6 months now and the only issue i've had is that my MS wireless mouns doesn't play nice with the mac - it works but it's kinda hinky. soooo - i have two mice sitting here. other than that - it's been golden. and you can'r even call it a hackentosh because i'm using the same hardware that comes in a mac pro that'll cost ya upwards of $3k.

To wrap up this Mac vs PC war before DB does...
To me and my experience, it comes down to this: If you like to futz with your computer more than getting work done, go Windows. If you like to get work done and don't care about what's on the other side of the garden wall, go Mac. If you swing both ways, Bootcamp.
It's that simple.

Thanks George— this thread was starting to smoke a bit.

All valuable info all around, though— thanks, gents.
