Kasey-- I went looking for a Mackie, and ended up finding a good price on a Zed 10. It'll be here next week Smile

That'll work great for what you are planning. I've used A&H working sound at a church for a spell and they have such versatility that it's hard to beat. I have never used one in a home studio setup, but I can't imagine that it would be any less versatile. Just keep it dusted off once a week Wink

In response to several inquiries via PM, I've put together a detailed blog post describing how to set up a phone patch using Skype and an external mixer:

Excellent tutorial. I might add that one can have the audio return to the stereo return left channel IF they need the input channels for other devices. This, of course, will only allow the audio in the mix and not on an Alt bus for monitor only.

I'm ordering cables. Are these the right ones? (And is there a place I can order both? Everywhere I looked only had one of the other!)

Hi Amy- the first one is right, the second one is a stereo to stereo, you want a stereo to mono.

Give me a moment and I'll find some links for you. Smile

Here's a 1/8 Stereo to 1/4 mono cable (you can pick the length you want)

And here's the 1/8 stereo to dual 1/4 mono cable (again, you can pick the length you want)

Both of these should be in any halfway decent music store- I got mine off the shelf at a place in Lacey.

Heh. Well, LA is bound to have better stock on hand. Wink

Let me know how it goes when you get all the gear and if there's anything I can do to help.

Amy==

I've only skimmed over the thread, but have you tried CallBurner? It works w/ SKYPE and allows you to record BOTH sides of the conversation (as well as a mixed version if you want it). But it sounds like you may need to have two heads. Gasp

Thanks, Perry. I don't have the need to record anything other than whatever comes out of my own mouth. I just need to be able to easily play back audio for clients.

Specifically, this one regular client who'd like to do our sessions via Skype when he's on the road and away from his studio.

Using the method I described you won't be able to playback from already-recorded audio to the Skype client, but they will hear you as you record -they hear your monitor as you hear it in your cans.

Is that going to be OK?

Rats! I thought that was the whole point of running it through the mixer! They could already hear me as I was recording with my previous method. Bummer...

I thought you wanted to be able to work without having a second headset on and so forth- what this setup does is essentially turn your mic/cans into the Skype microphone and headphone as well as recording locally.

That said, it's probably doable to create the scenario you're describing. What software do you use for recording? I assume you use a PC for your recording hardware.

Edit: Nvm, I found your post earlier, using Audition 3 on Win7. I have a similar setup here to what I described although I use Cubase. I'll see if I can set it up to work the way you need it to.

Embarrassed

I'm downloading the Audition 3 trial, I'll tinker with it so I can have something that matches your setup more closely.

The real issue is that these mixers we work with essentially work in one direction- they can record by sending a signal from the mic to the PC- and we can divert part of that to go to Skype, as I described- or they can send data from the PC to the mixer, but in the configuration I described there's no path for that signal to Skype.

That said, we can probably come up with something... by the way, do you have another audio interface? What did you/do you use before you purchased this mixer?

I had a Mackie, bought used on Craigslist about 6+ years ago that experienced a traumatic cat-related injury before ultimately passing away.

I use an M-Audio MobilePre USB as an outboard sound card on my editing machine. I have another one of those just sitting around that used to be in my mobile kit, before it was replaced by a MicPort Pro. (I've been recording with the MHobo Tounge full time since the Mackie's demise.)

I also have a PreSonus TubePre in my closet, but I don't remember why...
