I'm told it will take 4 to 6 weeks to get Insul-Sheild, and the distributor in LA for the denim insulation hasn't found any up here in the Pacific Northwest yet. On the other hand, I think I've found a very attractive way to go for my acoustical paneling, however, the folks that make this product appear to be on holiday. They haven't returned my voicemail yet after a week:

It might be a bit pricier with the cloth already attached (I don't know yet without a return call) but it sure would save labor. They also offer spiked wall hangers that you just push the panels onto, which would be the easiest way to repair the walls in case we ever leave.

Fantastic drawings and plans Mike

Thanks, there are many other post here with my layouts, you should spend some time in here.

I have a builder that claims to have built sound-proofed rooms in the past (although he's not an expert in acoustics) so I'm definitely going to show him this thread.

I'm sure he has. (snicker) I would want to see his work, if I were to hire someone. Even contracters that do this kind of work here in LA you have to watch them like a hawk; you need a Class "A" personality guy that pays attention to details, because one little shortcut will scuttle a booth or studio.

There's a company in the UK that sells acoustic foam cheaply.
Red Flag number one.

If I mount the 2" foam onto wooden boards to create an air-gap between the wall and the foam, will this suffice for acoustic dampening?
No sir, it will not. Especially mounting it on a board with an air-gap.

Let's understand that the best acoustic foam can not outperform Rigid Insulation - also foam is more expensive.

To further understand- It takes 6-inches of medium density foam to equal the performance of 2-inches of Rigid Insulation. Most rooms need 4-inches of rigid insulation on the walls to mitigate room resonance and reflections, and 6-inches across standing corners to absorb bass frequencies. So to be frank, and inch or two of mattress foam is not going to do much to improve your room.

We use air-gaps to help improve the efficiency of the rigid insulation, because, sound passes through the material and most high frequency energy is converted to heat, what's leftover hits the wall and reflects back into the insulation. Because drywall acts as "membrane bass absorber," the remaining sound energy is further absorbed by the insulation. Placing a plywood or even a thin membrane behind the insulation or foam, will reduce the efficiency of that material, so you may as well place it on the wall.

Interestingly enough, when there is really dead room, but we still have bass resonance problems, we can increase the bass absorption, and reflect the highs back into the room (making the room "less dead") by placing a membrane on the face of the of the material.

I hope this helps.

Acoustics are counter-intuitive. If one thing is certain about acoustics, it is that if anything seems obvious it is probably wrong.

Low's carries John Manville products, and they should be able to oder it.

Typically it takes most suppliers two to four weeks to get orders in. It's generally shipped ground. Unlike a few years ago most suppliers are not keeping shelves fully stocked, so they only order when they need to. This is why when I have projects coming up that require large quantities I always give them a heads up far in advance.
