I know one casting director who told me that voiceover Web sites are a waste of time -- that he never looks at them. Ever. He wants a demo CD in hand. Pretty old school, I'll admit, but he hires for some very lucrative work. So I've made a note to myself to make sure he always has a physical copy of my demo and to never refer him to my Web site. I didn't have to be rejected by him to learn that valuable bit of information.

And quite the opposite-- the agent from CESD that I met over the weekend said unequivocally that CD submissions all go in the trash. All repped artists MUST have a website and all demos will be accepted only via MP3.

Banksey doesn't seem to be suffering from having his voice play immediately. Harlan Hogan is another highly successful talent whose voice greets you when you visit his site. It's just him saying, "Hi, this is Harlan Hogan. Thanks for visiting my Web site." And it's in his signature voice. If you don't like hearing him say that in that voice. you're not going to hire him anyway. But plenty of people have hired him.

But who knows? Maybe if somebody hears a nobody like me welcoming them to my Web site, they think, "Shut up!" and move on.

We spend way too much time worrying about little things like this.

Do we have audio when the site loads? Should it be Flash or HTML? Should I never show my face as a VO artist? Do I use a microphone or not as a logo - is it overused?

Who cares. If you're right for a job then you're right for a job. Focus on attracting more work - that's really all there is.

I used to have an ALL FLASH website that took a while to load. Now I have an HTML one. No difference in the contacts I have made and the only reason I'm working more and more is because that's just the way that I've always intended it to be and have focused myself on that.

Let's get back to work.

No, no ,no! We need to encourage more voice over artists to waste as much time as possible on logos, page load times, coaching, avatars, multi-page web sites and anything else that encourages them to get and keep their eyes off the ball.

Pixels per square inch that come into view within 12.6 seconds of the page loading. How many is enough?

That's the only reason I come here. It's all part of my evil plan for world voiceover domination.

A couple of years ago a number of my fellow voice overs here in the UK got caught up in the minutiae of the dispute between our union Equity and the commerical radio association on new rates of pay for radio ad's. A bulletin board was filled with discussions, arguments, counter arguments and I nearly got sucked in to this tortured world.

I looked at the numbers. 80% of my time was spent on the radio commercial market and it generated 2.6% of my income. If I withdrew from the market could I take a 2.6% hit? Yep. Would I like more time to do other things? Yep. Did I walk away? Yep.

Here's the interesting part. In the following 12 months I had more spare time to devote to other projects including doing nothing, radio commercials still came in and my total income increased by over 50%. Coincidence or better use of staples?

I love these type discussions. They really are helping me focus. Reperat after (and with me)

I WILL NOT GET BOGGED DOWN IN THE MUNDANE DETAILS.
I WILL NOT GET BOGGED DOWN IN THE MUNDANE DETAILS.
I WILL NOT GET BOGGED DOWN IN THE MUNDANE DETAILS.

What I got out of this is, be your best (and always a pro) and MARKET, MARKET, MARKET. Also remember to take some time to have fun along the way. Life is too short to be so serious all the time and worry unecessarily about the things in life we can't control.

Enjoy life and have fun,

Greg

Hey whoa...sorry to resurrect this thread. Yikes! Just wanted to say I was somewhat annoyed to have to endure VO and jingle at a site upon which I happened (how's that grammar?). No worries--I don't think we're over-worrying about details, and pixels and taffy and world domination be damned. I love ya, man!

ESPN is really bad with this.

You're not joking. Everytime you go to the site a new blurb starts up and usually its a story I didn't care about in the first place. It annoys the heck out of me.

Great article, Anthony. I'm very prone to do that, so all the reinforcement I can get to stop that is great.
