|
|
For five years I've enjoyed nearly flawless operation of my Mac G5, until three days ago. It refused to boot up, and the fan would run at a continuous high speed. After trying many things I came across a Mac forum posting of a guy that used a hair dryer to preheat the DIMM slot area for a couple of minutes before turning it on. I thought, what the hey, I've nothing to lose. Lo and behold, it works! Of course I have to do it each and every time, and who knows when it will finally quit. A new logic board (motherboard) will cost a small fortune. I'm heading back to the PC world. Any suggestions? Home studio use only. |

Nelson,
I've been very happy with the Dell Precision workstations that I've purchased through their small business side. Extremely quiet and rock solid. _________________ Be well,

Macs don't go kablooey very often, but when they do it can be confounding and unique.

That's really odd, never heard that one before.
Though I understand the bad taste this has left, you could go with an iMac or a Mac Mini. _________________ The Blog:

Acoustics are counter-intuitive. If one thing is certain about acoustics, it is that if anything seems obvious it is probably wrong. |

Interesting... 5 years of reliable service of your Mac G5 and now jumping ship to PC? Mac Mini is all you need. Of all the Mac hardware I've had come and go, my 2005 Intel Mac Mini is the one that just keeps on going, year after year. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

I have a Mac G5 which is exactly 5 years old and still going strong. I still have room to upgrade the RAM and I added a second hard drive. No problems! Unfortunately I'm starting slip behind with software; it's too old to run Snow Leopard, so if I ever want to buy Audition for Mac, Old Faithful will need to be replaced! |

helen - lots of stuff apple SAYS won't run on power pc - (whisper) really WILL. final cut studio 3, for example. you just can't use the apple installer to install it. you can use a product like "pacifist" to bypass all that. that said, apple doesn't SUPPORT doing this - but it does, in many cases, work. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

You're right, George, a knee jerk reaction indeed. I've never had virus issues, etc. with the G5 either. I am considering the Mac Mini. Once I get a replacement computer, I'd like to try figuring out what component/s may have gone belly up on the Logic Board and replace it/them...cheaply of course. Winters are long in Maine, I'll need something else to do besides move snow around. |

Nelson:
The current Mac Mini is a very capable piece of kit that has enough horsepower to handle almost any VO task you might throw at it. It's an amazingly quiet machine too. (There was a recent thread here where someone mentioned an audiobooks company that tells all their voices to go buy a Mac Mini immediately, or something like that.)
A RAM upgrade from 4 to 8 GB will make the Mini really come alive.
I bought the base model on George's recent recommendation, and am a very happy camper. |
