I'm flying out of Texas for two weeks on an extended assignment. I've assembled a pretty good mobile studio set-up. I'll be wanting to take this as carry-on as I don't want to a) Run the risk of my gear ending up on Guam and b) Have some airline monkey damage it.
I'll be carrying a laptop, small mixer, USB HD, and desk mic stand. I've got quite a bit of work that can't wait until I get back, so's I gotta voice on da road.
My question to you more experienced travelers: Do the TSA people give you much grief when going through your stuff. I see these morons going through my gear and getting ideers that I gots one of them 'nookler' deevices. _________________ www.voiceoverdrew.com

Drew, my mobile unit didn't cause even a raised eyebrow during my recent international junket. Even when they hauled my journal out of my pack and my smart alec kid piped up "Yes, plan for world domination, seems to be in order...." they didn't bother me.
Course, I'm a girl, and would never hurt a flea. You're a guy. Could be completely different. |

The only issue I've ever had was with the mic stand! One TSA savant believed that the weighted foot of the desk mic stand might be used as a weapon. That event occurred more than two years ago. After that, I put the mic stand in the suit case.
Outside of that, I carry a mixer, mic's, laptop, etc. with no problem.

Lately I've been carrying two road bags through airports: a "leather" briefcase with my laptop, power cords, etc; and a shoulder bag with my mbox, connecting cables, and a Shure SM7 mic. The only thing that gets a strange look is the SM7.
Has anyone run into a nifty carry-on bag that can accomodate a laptop, mic, mbox and cables? I noticed that Sweetwater had an Mbox bag for sale awhile ago, but it was quite expensive, and it had DIGIDESIGN emblazoned across the side. Not only was it ugly, but it alerted all who could see that something special was inside.

Good idea, Charlie. I'll put the stand in the suit case. And yeah, they truly are savants. _________________ www.voiceoverdrew.com

I get more attention because of what I tell them I do, than because of the content of my cases... "Really, anything that I'd have seen or heard? To which I have yet to reply (but would really like to at some point) "Probably not, unless you watch a lot of middle eastern television"
I doubt you'll have any problems, just be damn sure that the 2 cases are the right size and weight, because it's been the check-in counter and in-flight crew who have caused me the most grief!
Happy travelling Drew!

Get a BIG bumper sticker with the words "MOBILE RECORDING STUDIO" and place it on the inside flap of the case carrying your gear.
Sometimes you have to literally spell it out for people.

I think a big bumper sticker simply saying "TRANSMORGRIFIER" would be infinitely more interesting.

I have a Digi Bag-- I use it for all my traveling. It's a carryon, so it's never out of my sight.
It's a very convenient bag, even if you don't like its looks! _________________ DBCooperVO.com

Mark Smedley is the sole proprietor of Pikapackworks (that's www. and .com before and after if you want to search). He is an industrial sewer with emphasis on bicycle storage bags for air transport. Nonetheless, he does custom orders and I'm wondering aloud here whether he'd be interested in designing a carry-on (or bag that can be checked) for this express purpose. I'll email him and inquire, but if you're interested, his email is mark@pikapackworks.com. Phone # 801.363.0304. He's in Salt Lake City (you know...home of the 2002 Winter Olympiad). _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!

I had one TSA guy back up my suitcase to take a closer look at my AKG 1000 as it went through screening - he called another guy over to look at it and he knew what it was - off-handedly saying - oh that's a microphone.
Normally I put it all in my backpack computer bag - small DBX, mic, headphones and cables. But sometimes I want less weight, so I pack everything except the computer in my suitcases surrounded by soft clothes.
Reminds me of the time I shot a marketing movie in Mazatlan and we went in and out through customs as tourists - with a Bolex and a pair of lights disguised as heat lamps... _________________ Playing for a living...

This sinister-looking object attracted a second look by airline security 23 years ago:

They might.
Don't think Great Auks do though. And they're extinct, more's the pity. |
