1) My young friend innocently commented upon finding my demo...
"Wow! I'll give you five bucks to record my voicemail message!"
2) After auditioning for a staged reading, I received a call from the artistic director of the theatre who said the director and the writer of the production in question both came out and said,
"Call her back to audition for The Crucible! She's a really good actress."
I'm serious when I say that both of those comments made both of those days. I mean... How rare is it to receive any positive response to anything we do? We just do our thing and do it some more. And then we do it some more. And then people pay us for our product. It's a slam, bam, thank you, ma'am (Or messr. But the poem doesn't work then.)
Our art matters to the clients. That's part of why they hire us. But the business of it all takes precedence and too often overshadows the art. We are left to pat ourselves on the back in praise of that picture we drew and placed carefully under the refrigerator magnet.
It's just nice when somebody else walks by the fridge and says, "Good job."
Pay is good, too. Pay is real good. _________________ Patricia Shanks

I agree.
Sometimes people say the nicest things almost by accident. In January 2005 a P.S in an email told me that a project I'd voiced had won the Royal Television Society 2004 Best TV promotion award with a commendation for the voice over. A very nice "oh by the way.."
Of course some compliments can prove to be curses rather than blessings.
"It'll be largely down to you if we get another series" said a TV series producer. So is it fair to assume that it was largely down to me that we didn't ? ...Oooh the burden of blame!!! |
