I did a quick search but didn't see this exact question, so I'll ask here:
Has anybody done a one-to-one test between the MicPortPro, the BLue Icicle and Harlan Hogan's MicMate Pro?
If so, results? _________________ Charter Member: Threadjackers Local 420 |

Yes, the MicPort Pro wins, hands down.
I tested a MicMate Pro at MXL in THEIR studio, and it was a dud, never touched one again. The Icicle sounds good, but has no monitoring built in, which is a deal breaker for me. Harlan has nothing to do with the MicMate Pro from MXL, BTW.
There's also the Shure X2u, which for $100 is pretty sweet, but can't do 24/96 recording (some care, some don't). It's advantage is not needing any third party drivers to function properly in Windows or Mac OS. Also has a monitor blend knob, like an Mbox. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

Yes, the monitoring aspect of the MicPort Pro is a plus, I would think. I noted that the Icicle did NOT have that, which was a negative.
thanks for the info! _________________ Charter Member: Threadjackers Local 420 |

my MicPort Pro seems to get very warm during the course of use.....I've mostly used it plugged in the mic.... is this normal? I've been shutting it down after using for an hour for fear I'm burning it out.... |

If you are using the MicPortPro with a condenser mic and are using phantom power it will get warm. You don't have to unplug it; just kill the power until you need it. If you're using it with a dynamic mic and not using phantom power it will get slightly warmer than room temperature and you can probably leave it plugged in around the clock.
Someone more technically knowledgeable than I will have to tell you whether the heat can cause damage. I suspect not. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

The aluminum chassis is designed to radiate away the heat from the power circuitry inside the unit. When converting DC 5v from USB to DC 48v for phantom power there is some efficiency loss, which creates the heat. Like Lee said, just turn off the P48 when not in use. I turn it off all the time to cut the mic when editing so I can't hear the mic in my cans. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

Never thought I'd say this, but: can you be a little more specific?
What did you mean by "a dud"?
Just wondering what I am not hearing, as I respect your superior ears and knowledge.
I actually own both the MicMate Pro and the MicPort Pro, and apart from the extremely touchy gain knobs, have been happy with both.
Heard the original MicMate was not very good. |

I saw your post minutes after you'd posted it, but I had to register before I could answer. With this, years of lurking have finally come to an end!
I've exchanged emails with Centrance's Michael Goodman and he really stands behind his products. A MicPort Pro is what I bought for my sister and for myself. |

..again, that shootout/review was of the original MicMate, and not the MicMate Pro. |

Sorry, meaning it didn't function at all, was defective.
Harlan Hogan just sent me a MMP to test, so I'll compare the M and share my findings. I don't like that you can't disengage the 48V power. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.
