Wouldn't you love to be able to "see" ahead of time when someone gets the gig? It would save you alot of trouble.

Anyway, I find this interesting:

B o b J u m p has this posted on his website...

and here's the guy that does the national spots for the 2 0 0 6 B u i c k L u c e r n e. Oh, and here's his commercial demo.

Do you think he fits the spec? I do, but it does sound crazy and "out there" when you read it as it was written.

Jeez, it's like casting anything.

You have an idea, but then when you hear or see THE GUY, sometimes all your other notions get cast aside.

The best-laid plans of mice and men, etc.

This casting specs were pretty goddam priceless, though.
I'm surprised Bob posted them! Especially with the commentary.

He's probably forgotten it's still on his website - I don't see it linked from anywhere on his site - i found it in my daily Google hunting.

EDIT: Nevermind - I see it linked from the upper righthand logo

Ooh-- -you internet spelunker, you.

I'm glad you posted this! It's a reminder to audition to the best of your ability-- damn the casting specs.

I agree that was a ridiculous casting notice (I have a much worse one I'll post one of these days), but I think they got their man. The guy has a great voice for the spots, fits the specs, and deserves the gig.

Sooo many factors go into choosing a voice, and often soooo many decision makers are involved in big national accounts, that there is no way of accurately predicting your chances of getting a gig. Just do the audition best you can and walk away. I mean, wouldn't fishing be great if you caught something every time you dropped your line in the water? It just doesn't happen.

Exactly! I can't remember the last time I followed specs - you can usually get some quick direction from the first sentence, then they kill you with all the explanations - as if THEY even know what they're looking for! LOL - they usually don't until they hear it.

The worst trend ever is this Paélla of celebrity names.

Yeah. One name is plenty. You know, the iconic shorthand of "I want someone who sounds like:..." names: James Earl Jones, Tom Bodett, Sam Elliott, Peter Coyte, Perri Gilpin, PeeWee Herman, the usual suspects.

What throws me is when they ask for someone I'm not familiar with because I don't watch Friends or America's Funniest Incendiary Weapons.

I lied on one of my first auditions - once i got in the vocal booth, they asked me, "Have you seen Napolean Dynamite"

I thought - "Who hasn't seen it... uh, me." But I said, "Yeah! Love it"

They said, "OK - they want you to be Pedro - Napolean's buddy."

I said, "Uh... ok"

I went with an overboard Mexican accent. I went home and rented the darn thing and I said, "Oops. Close - but no."

LOL - You have to watch TV and movies so much now that you won't have time to actually work.
