I use an RE20 with a DBX 286A and it does indeed work great. Although.....I am getting the itch for a new mic.

I've been using the RE-0 / Studio Projects C-1 with the Mackie 1202VLZ and a Symetrix 528 for years. It's a great combination. The DBX was always the processor of choice for the RE 20 in radio studios. It seemed to play well with the Optimods.

The RE20 into the DBX is a very standard radio chain. I think we used that at all but one radio station I worked at over the years. Personally I find it a bit bass heavy and too colored for me for voiceover but I LOVED how I sounded on it when I did a morning show - especially after a long night out at the bars. YMMV.

Hope the post isn't too old to chime in on...

I absolutely LOVE my Re20 with the dbx286A.

Someone asked about audio interefaces.. I've had a tremendous amount of luck the the Echo Audio Mia MIDI. This has been rock solid and consistent since the day i installed it.. 2005, maybe??? 2006? Love it, love it, love it.

If you're working in a less than perfect room, the gate on the dbx286a doesn't WOOSH closed like others i've used.

For reference, my application is primarily for radio use and not narration.

Something that I found helps when using cheaper pre's with gain hungry mics, is to keep the mic gain lower and boost it at the output.
Although this goes against textbook gain staging, it does give a MUCH cleaner signal. With my DBX386/sm7 pairing I went from an almost unusable recording to practically 100% noise free even after normalizing to -1.

That's something I've always said. So as long as you can get good clean audio into your computer, you can boost it to the moon. But normalizing can introduce other problems in and of them self, it's better to apply gain boost to your files.
