You are RIGHT, Kara. I guess what has frustrated me...but will ultimately DRIVE me to do this right, is the fact that I've been doing this for quite awhile, albeit on a small scale. I have to think that I would not have been hired for what I have if there wasn't SOMETHING there...the feedback I've been given could very easily lead me to believe there isn't.

This morning I listened to a few of Pat Fraley's tips and have taken note of every word. I will continue to do that while scaling back MY expectations of where I'll be in the near future. As I said in my post earlier this morning, I've learned that I need to slow down and LEARN.

I'm obviously not GREAT but I don't think I SUCK but I also know that I can only get better. I can't HELP but get better with the great advice all of you have been willing to share with me. It's been a ruff 24 hours as far as my ego goes, but an eye opening one as well...and that is nothing but a good thing! Laugh

Dude, I royally sucked when I started. Really. (If you search the archives, I think there's a thread here where I wrote specifically why I sucked and how I know I sucked... b/c my coach pretty much said that). I still got hired though.

But I kept at it, and kept practicing, taking classes, and learning all I could. And I still do.

Now I only suck at some parts of vo... but there are other parts of vo that I know I'm pretty good at (and I also know there are number of other people who are pretty good at those parts too). Those parts/reads are my niche. But I'm still trying to get better at the "other parts" so I can broaden my horizons. Not that I'll be all things to all people, but I know I have more in me.

BORED WARNING MESSAGE

The above can only be mentioned by Caryn. Anyone else who even looks as if they may mention any of Caryn's parts will get slapped.

Steve- you certainly don't suck! You've got good chops and with some hard work you can do big things! You've been doing well at smaller market stuff, but the bigger market stuff is just waiting around the corner.

My story really broken down...I went full time in VO 3 1/2 years ago after voicing on the side for about 9 years. I had already built a nice resume, but I knew trends had changed. So, I took lessons. Lots and lot of lessons. I studied with Nancy Wolfson for 3 years, I took a class with Bob Bergen, I studied with Cynthia Songe and re-listened to everything from Pat Fraley (he had actually coached me at the beginning of my career many years ago). I took acting classes and impov classes, even though I had been taking them off and on for years. Think I stopped there? nope- I just started studying with Marice Tobias last year and started a VO club where I can learn even more.

My story matches the stories of so many on the board.

There is no ego in VO...and this is a good place to learn that. Just wait until you hear 'no' 4-6 times a day (in reference to auditions). It's ok, because the yeses are that much sweeter!

I think you are in a good place and know what you need to do. It'll be good to see how you progress Smile
